has anyone bought a cheap woodburner on eBay?

We would like another woodburner to help heat our downstairs and have been looking at lots of different types / makes/ models. We only need a 4-5 kw one and the chimney is already lined. I was looking at some cheap woodburners on eBay but confused what difference there is between these and say a Morso one at almost 10 x the price. Are the cheaper eBay ones any good? or are we best saving up for something better? These are a couple I've been looking at...

Ooh. Me too. We are looking at them too. We have seen Rolls Royce ones for £1400 and similar for £400 on eBay. Would love to know if the £1000 drop in price is reflected in how long it lasts / heat etc.

We brought a cheap ebay one (not one f the ones you've linked and i cant find who sorry). It was fitted by a professional and he said he couldnt tell any difference in its quality. I've never had another stove, so cant compare, but it heats really well and looks lovely.
would be pref if you could see it first, usual ebay seller checks and references.

Yes I bought one. If it had been installed correctly it would have been fine.
A register plate would have been useful too.

I noticed that in the UK woodburners are luxuries and on the continent they are normal. I researched the UK fire I liked at 3k. Found it in Germany including£ 150 shipping for less than 1k!!!!! It was a bit of a hunt to find the non UK names but you can tell as they use the same photos and spec books just under a different name. It was actually an Italian manufacturer but my German was better and their English amazing

Interesting. I think we might go for it and get a cheaper one. I an sure the build quality etc is not quite as good but for a £1000 difference I can live with that I think! We will probably go for the first one, its a company on ebay that just sell stoves and have loads of positive feedback. And it looks pretty too, can't wait!

Our stove fitter said that he installed a cheap stove in his own house as he was skint after moving. He said he wished he'd spent more as it was a false economy. So I'd say there may well be great cheap stoves out there but be careful and research it well.

FunMitFlags · 20/03/2015 20:44

We have one cheap stove (installed by previous owner of the house) and one Morso. The difference is staggering. The Morso gives off much, much more heat and uses a lot less wood/coal to do so.

lolalotta · 20/03/2015 20:51

My friend bought one from eBay and was bitterly disappointed. They are rubbish. Notice more than the quality of a BBQ she said. False economy. We bought a clearview pioneer 400, it's £££s but amazing.

Artfooldodger · 20/03/2015 20:51

We have a Clearview 400p which heats our 4 bedroom house if we leave all the doors ajar. Our neighbours bought an Internet "bargain" at the same time as they're doing their house up on a tight budget. They bitterly regret it.

Our installer recommended that when we finally move to buy a cheap one off the internet to replace ours here, then take our Clearview to our new home as he said it's essentially an investment for life. We love it!!!

lolalotta · 20/03/2015 20:52

Nothing not notice!

X posts with artfool on how amazing the clearview is! GrinGrinGrin

We love it's modern but classic look too - very tempted by tall round models, including Charnwood, but our installer recommended Clearview above all others. Have to say he was right for us. Our lounge is 6.5m x 7.5m with a wall of bifold doors but the Clearview throws out loads of heat with very little logs. I'm in love with ours Grin

yes and I wouldn't make the same mistake again

Cheap Chinese untested imports that don't comply with European safety standards using inferior cast iron (sometimes all recycled stuff 'boiled' up again) . Apt to crack, the joins will be dodgy, finishing off poor, airwash poor. You will end up using far more fuel for far less efficiency

We now have a Morso Panther and the difference is staggering

Gatekeeper · 21/03/2015 13:37

you would be much better off buying the basic Charnwood Country stove which you can buy for around £600. Charnwood are made in UK and the build quality is excellent as is the performance
