Would I be mad to try applying a stain to solid oak floors myself?

We had solid oak floors laid throughout the ground floor of our house four years ago. They looked absolutely stunning for about ten minutes but the wax the chap used quickly faded away and they look sad and tired and you have to lift the rug in the sitting room to see how glorious they once were Sad.

I'd like to lightly sand them and then apply Morrell's wood stain to bring up the colour again but the chap who laid them (a complete cowboy) tells me it must be done by a professional and that I'll ruin them if I do it myself.

Note: I'm not very handy in the house.

I know that I would make a complete hash of it if I did it myself. Isn't it just a case of re-waxing the floor?

I think I would phone some experts, email them some pictures and see what they think.

I used this company for my hallway: www.broadleaftimber.com/help/broadleaf-wood-floors-installation-guide/wood-floor-aftercare-guide

Applying the stain is not the difficult bit here, the sanding is. It will be the noisiest thing you've ever done and generate more dust than you can imagine.

No I don't think you should. I tried staining an old table once and made a complete hash of it. But it didn't matter. But oak floors. No. Get in a professional or wait till you can afford one.

Thank you. That sounds like a bit of a nightmare. Maybe I should just put up with them. My husband likes the distressed look but it's not just the floors that are distressed Sad.

l have just had oak laid in my bathroom. The wood has been sealed and l am really pleased with result. When deciding the builder sent me off to a timber merchant. l sat in a gallery looking at different woods and their applications. Not only could you see wood from trunk to finished timber but they also had advice on care, stains, suitability etc. There was also a board with workmen who specialised in wood. Although they will not endorse l expect they will soon let you know who is better than others.
