White gloss units, wooden floor, what worktop??

Help! Cannot believe how much time I have spent looking at this!
It's an open plan room with a living area so don't want it to be all white and clinical, hence the wooden floor.
Current thought is wood work tops fro wall based run of units where oven is and then sparkly white of some sort on island where sink will be.
Has anyone got a similar / alternative set up that looks good?
Thanks

What colour is the wood?

MyVegasBaby · 16/03/2015 11:49

Light/medium engineered oak is the current plan

Would avoid wooden worktops - there was a thread recently about them if you search for it. Ours look like crap after 7 years. Black water marks, faded areas, rings where hot pans have been put down, and just downright mucked up. For a heavily used area of kitchen I really don't think they are suitable.

We are replacing our kitchen soon with similar set up. I like white but husband won't have it. Our current thinking is Silestone in Rougui www.silestone.co.uk/quartz-colours/colour/rougui/. Maybe a bit wishy washy but we are keen to keep it neutral and add colour/texture with accessories. Also looked at Ceaserstone Latte and Shitake colours but too expensive when quoted. Hopefully someone will come up with some good suggestions that look at too!

Would a black work - you could have a black sparkly on one section and white sparkly on the other? Would your budget run to Corian? They have some super finishes, and you might be able to blend it in with the other furnishings in the room.

We have a pale wooden floors, vanilla gloss kitchen and plain black granite, it does work really well.

We have the same with a 'wood' laminate in the same shade as the floor. It looks great and ties the floor in as well as adding warmth to the colours. I couldn't be dealing with maintaining real wood and I'm really pleased with how it looks. Cheap too!

We have Matt vanilla shaker style units, ivory fantasy granite and light oak engineered floors - looks good in my opinion! Our kitchen faces north east, so wanted to keep it light. Black will absorb light so I would avoid if your kitchen is dark.

Your set up sounds similar to ours (open plan kitchen diner). We have a wall run of worktop with a little corner bit too and then we have an island unit.

We have a matt white kitchen and solid bamboo flooring (walnut colour). We have a Duropal laminate in a dark brown (similar to the floor) along the wall for the "working" worktop (and we've actually used it to box in all the cupboards too, as a sort of surround to soften the white). On the island unit, I have a very very pale grey quartz (Compaq) which I absolutely love. The contrast looks lovely (imo). Would have loved the Compaq for all of it, but probably wouldn't have been able to go with such a light colour.

I second what everyone says about wooden worktops - in our last house we had wooden worktops for the working areas and the island. Although I was very careful and treated them properly, we did get black marks around the sink.

Diy kitchens has a great tool for visualising kitchens, you can change the units, worktop, flooring, handles etc

I have what IHeart has - engineered oak flooring and a laminate work surface in the same colour, as I cook a lot and I was advised this was the best option. Looks fab, mine also has living space too

We have wood butchers block type work surfaces which look lovely! But if you aren't up for oiling then regularly, then I wouldn't! I sand mine when they get marked and re oil, which isn't a massive problem, but a bit of a fag tbh.

Picture on my profile of my kitchen :
white units, bamboo worktops and floor.
The tiles are irridescent so change colour all the time

MyVegasBaby · 17/03/2015 14:43

Thanks all, have found out we need to have granite or similar for the island due to the size. Will look at wood laminate for the wall run as having read this and other articles real wood doesn't seem worth it.

Why?
What are the dimensions?

My island is two pieces of bamboo back to back.
The join down the middle just looks like another grain mark and bamboo has no top, bottom, front, back or side.
