Painting F&B or Little Greene over already painted wallpaper

Is it possible to paint over a wallpaper using F&B or Little Greene paint? In fact is it possible to paint over a wallpaper which is currently cream to a different colour using any paint?

The wallpaper has little raised patterns but it isnt a woodchip or anything that horrible. In the current state it looks alright and not really something that must be ripped off.

I think it's possible to paint over wallpaper and I guess the type and colour of paint rather than the brand would make most difference. I think you'd need to think about:

  1. what are the state of your walls under the paper like? If they're ok you'd definitely get a better finish stripping the paper and filling/sanding any small areas that need it. If not so good then stripping the paper could lead to needing plastering done.
  1. What colour you're thinking of painting it, darker than the existing would be easier but if it has any colour on the raised pattern that may show through?
  1. are you happy that you would always have the imprint of the pattern showing through?
  1. I think that it would be harder to remove the wallpaper once it's painted over so would mean more work in the future.

Good luck, I think if there was any way of not painting over it I wouldn't but I can appreciate that it would make the job a lot easier!

Walls have a textured paper and the paper looks alright, i mean it isnt peeling off or very old. I have no idea how the wall is behind the paper. It is an old house so could be in any state.

We are thinking of no major refurbishment at the moment but will extend and do some other work on it after 2-3 years. So I am thinking either to just live with the way walls are or paint it to white or grey colour. It is cream/custurd colour at the moment. I wouldnt mind textures being visible after the paint but dont want the whole wallpaper to bubble up. Eventually someday i would like it all to be plastered smooth but for next 2-3 years can we just change the colour by painting it?

I've done this
Mine was lining paper painted cream
I painted it elephants breath estate emulsion looks beautiful as lining paper was applied well by previous owners...
I did need 3 good coats though

Yes do it.

We have textured paper in the hallway and painted over it with f&b. Only thing is it needed about 4 coats. Looks great

great! I have been looking at F&B shades all weekend and thinking about it. It is lining paper painted cream in existing place and you have given me confidence :)

Now all I need to do is to find out how much it will cost and convince DH!

Any idea how much paint will be required for a small 3 bed semi walls? we are not going to paint ceiling as it is already white.

We have done this several times over the years, we have lining paper in the living room and don't know what state the walls are in so have left it there and painted over it. The paper has bubbled up in a few places when wet but has then gone down again and looks fine.

Have also done this in F&B French Grey. I panicked a bit as my wallpaper also started to bubble but, like the previous poster said, it went down completely when dry. It looks really nice Smile

We are living in a house where the previous owners painted over their wallpaper, and we are trying to take it down. It is really difficult and time consuming to remove

mum2015 · 17/03/2015 09:29

Whyjustwhyagain,

Is it on a lining paper, i mean wallpaper intended for painting over it or normal wallpaper?

In fairness it's wall paper, sometimes with lining paper underneath. And just to add to add to the fun, Sometimes it's paint, on paint, on wallpaper, on another wallpaper, on lining paper
