If your TV is on the wall, where is your Sky box etc??

Very awkward shaped room and so we are considering mounting the tv on the wall above the fireplace. But where do we put the Sky box/DVD player/games console?? Would ideally like them hidden away but need access for remote controls etc.

What set up do you have? Any issues with wall mounting TVs that I should be aware of (eg it's terribly naff??)?

We wall mounted our TV so that it was out of reach of a very sticky fingered toddler Grin

Out solution for Sky/DVD/Games Consoles was to buy a flat pack sideboard and leave the back off for cable access. It means that we can close the doors when not watching anything and have a much neater look to our living room.

Our tv is on the chimney breast, all cables are hidden. We have a built in cupboard and shelving unit to the side of the chimney breast in the recess, Sky box etc lives in there

I really dislike the the look of TVs mounted above fireplaces (sorry) but more importantly please consider the ergonomics of he situation. Craning your neck to watch a TV that's above your natural seated eyeline will get very uncomfortable, very quickly.

Maybe consider mounting the TV on a pivoting arm at a lower level. You can still push it back against the wall for neatness, but you can equally pull it out to the most comfortable viewing angle.

I agree above the fireplace is a bit high for TVs. What about the alcove to the side of the fireplace? That way you could put a cabinet below to hold all the boxes etc (glass or mesh fronted so remotes work) or just have some shelves built in there. Wires can be chased into the wall and hidden, or you could even build a "false wall" slightly in front of your real wall and the wires go up the back of that.

Mine isn't above a fireplace it is on the chimney breast at eye level. Mara you may dislike them but you'll find a lot of people find putting them on the wall quite practical. And TVs are getting bigger so they look better higher up than in a corner - you can't really put a 50" tell at floor level can you?

BumWad I didn't say that I dislike wall-mounted TVs. I said that I don't like the look at TVs mounted high above a fireplace because the OP asked for opinions. They're just not my cup of tea. It sounds like your arrangement would be much more comfortable to watch than a TV mounted very high on the wall.

However, to reiterate: my concern isn't aesthetic, it's practical. A fixed wall mounting means that your sitting room arrangement always has to be dictated by the position of the TV. It makes it impossible to tilt the screen if there is glare from sunlight, or to adjust the angle if there are more people than usual watching, or if you need to change the layout of the room temporarily (such as to accommodate a Christmas tree or a child's playpen).

That's why I suggest an adjustable arm. This is mounted to the wall, and enables you to pull the TV out a little way and angle it if necessary, but equally enables you to keep the TV pushed flush against the wall if you prefer this neater look. At the very least I'd look for a mount which enables you to tilt the screen by about 15°.

I agree that TVs that are mounted on the wall at a position above normal eye level from the sofa - doesn't work for me. We have a 46" which is on a boring ikea TV unit. Looks neat - nothing great, but the viewing level is perfect - sofa eye level maps to the middle of the screen height. Wall mounting is also ok so long as the height is correct.

Hide your skybox etc away in a cupboard and install a " magic eye". It plugs in the back of your sky box and has a small receiver on a length of cable so your remote still works. Put receiver up with telly. Very cheap to buy as well

ChunkyPickle · 12/03/2015 15:57

I've just moved ours off the chimney, to a side wall and much prefer it - doesn't seem to take up so much space in the room.
When it was on the chimney, the boxes were on the shelves either side of the chimney breast.

Now that it's on a side wall, the boxes are either still on the shelves with very long leads, and one is on a tall cabinet next to the TV because the leads weren't long enough and I haven't bothered to buy more.

We have a projector screen above the fireplace. The screen disappears behind a wooden beam. The projector and wires are at the other end of the room, hidden in the wall, and the wii, boxes etc are in an oak cabinet.
We love it. By day it looks like a smart sitting room, by evening a cinema.
We do have a normal tv in the children's playroom which gets used only occasionally.

That magic eye thing sounds great! I took the doors off an old teak sideboard to use as a tv stand (mostly to stop the kids climbing on the old tv stand) and I'd love to be able to put them back on.

Easier to share a picture than try to explain:

This is me probably being very old fashioned, but I hate the tv being the focal point in the room. I want the fire place to be that. I don't understand the obsession with massive televisions either?

We have alcove units in our chimney alcoves, and our tv sits on one of these. Cables etc. are hidden in cupboards below.

Blackeyez09 · 15/03/2015 10:15

In forever home will have a TV room/ snug and keep living and dining rooms for just that as I'm old fashioned too!

TeddyBee · 15/03/2015 15:45

we have just mounted our tv on our bedroom wall as i didnt want to crowd the room with furniture. we had like a black glass shelf that looks like part of the tv. im not sure if its a bit bedroomy tho?? i know that doesnt make sense but i know this wouldnt look right in my living room, it looks too modern for my living room as its quite traditional but looks good with my bedroom decor. it looks as if it comes down from under the tv, the cables are all hidden in the back tube, i got it from amazon for under £30, delivered very fast. very easy to put together (4steps) it was like this but just one shelf (i cnt find the one i had now)

It will not hurt your neck or eyes if its eye level though? Mines absolutely fine at eye level, Should be at eye sight level anyways to get the most out of your picture quality

Squirreltamer · 27/09/2019 15:14

Be aware if you’re attached to a neighbour/ other room. Above a certain volume the tv will transfer the sound to the other room like a hot knife though butter. The wall acts like a drum skin.

I should know I can hear Master Chef crystal clear :( and it isn’t loud on their side.

Not sure if they do sound reducing mounts like they do for speakers.
