If you have a kitchen with a large amount of colour in it, how do you feel about it years on?

We are planning to replace our kitchen. I've never done a new kitchen before as every hosue we've bought so far has had an aceptable kitchen, and we've never been able to justify changes to it.

Now I need to decide whether to stay traditional in the colours I choose (along the lines of white/cream/grey/black/traditional wooden stains), or go for something with more of a bright colour somewhere eg a coloured range cooker, coloured units, coloured glass splashback etc.

The only think that is puting me off is that I will tire of it, and that it will limit other ways that I can update the kuitchen. Eg if we stayed neutral/traditional, I could put a new look on the whole thing in a few years time if I bought blinds in a splashy colour, or kettle/toaster in a bright colour etc.

And also, I would imagine that when it comes to selling the property (maybe in ten or so years time, but who knows, that time might come sooner), having a strong colour will provoke a more love it ot hate it reaction in potential sellers. I am a 'buy once, buy well' kind of person, and woudnt want to spend money and replace something perfectly functional.

So, if you chose a bright colour in your kitchen, how do you feel about it 5/10/whatever years on?

Good question. We're at the same point. I've seen some bright green kitchens that I'm tempted by but think it would give most people the screaming abdabs.

Zinxie · 11/03/2015 13:47

I'm always grateful for my coloured kitchen, every time I walk into it! I love it.
Seriously!
I feel sorry for people with colourless kitchens.
I saw a colour scheme in a magazine, that I loved, and I copied it. It's very sunny and Mediterranean. Not ott, not garish, just very definitely lifting to the spirits.
It's 'home' and got character and its friendly. The whole family love it.
Just choose easy to live with colours that lift your spirits. You'll never regret it, as long as you don't choose garish or faddy.
Then, you'll go into other, colourless kitchens, and be surprised at the lack of warmth and vitality.
So, yeh.. Go for it!

Agree that a painted kitchen is the way to go. Easy to keep it looking fresh.

WellTidy · 11/03/2015 14:09

I like green - apple green or lime green or sage green (not together!). So I was thinking of having a mix of sage green (base) and white (wall) painted units, with a grey quartz worksurface, white wall tiles and mid grey tiled floor.

Splashy and bright roller blinds for the windows using the grey/green/white.

Chrome/stainless steel kettle/toaster/coffee maker.

Or, do I go really bright? Orange or something? I've always liked orange. So maybe an orange range master, and bright orange chairs, and a seventies retro style print for the roller blinds?

We've bought two houses that had colourful kitchens (blue walls and tiles in the last one, dark red walls in the one before) and liked and kept them both! I think it isn't a drawback when selling as long as it is done well.
(I am wondering about this too as we've just bought a new house. I took a right liking to a bright blue Aha I saw in an interiors mag but given our cooking habits we'd be better off buying a really good freezer and microwave...)

toomuchtooold · 11/03/2015 16:14

Aga. An Aga. Dear me, my phone's autocorrect is not very middle class is it?

Lelivre · 11/03/2015 16:17

Bright blue? Do it!

Saw some striking glass splash backs in a bright yellow, in the Houzz newsletter today.

zippyrainbowbrite · 11/03/2015 16:20

We have an open plan, quite minimalist house and my kitchen is hi gloss white cupboards with a red Corian (with sparkly quartz bits in it) worktop.

It's not to everyone's taste, but after 6 years I still love it! Grin

WellTidy · 11/03/2015 16:26

zippy that sounds wonderful. If I bought a house with a kitchen like yours, I would love it too. I just don't know if I am brave enough. What is your floor like? And your tiling or splashback (colour/pattern)? Please?

Bright blue isn't me at all, sorry. I'm sure a bright blue Aga is lovely though. I like warmer colours like red and green and orange I think. Not together.

We're hoping that when we come To sell someone else will just love it too - it's quite a marmite house!

We have large black ceramic floor tiles (not mat, but not a high gloss either) and stainless steel appliances (microwave, kettle, toaster, large range cooker and American style fridge freezer) apart from my kitchen aid which is lime green!

It sounds a bit random, but it works because it's all quite minimalist and tidy. Our style is to have neutral backgrounds, then just add a pop of colour. The green kitchenaid sounds random with the red, but works as it's open plan to the lounge, where the same green is the pop of colour.

Zinxie · 11/03/2015 16:41

Well, nobody ever wishes their garden was a different colour. Green is so giving, as a colour. It brings us back to nature, makes us relax, so I'd say a palette of greens for cupboards is perfect.

If you like orange and red too, add that via accessories. I think habitat has orange kitchen chairs. Orla kiely does nice kitchen tins etcin that colour range.

Marimekko does fab bright kitchen trays, tea towels, etc.

Zinxie · 11/03/2015 16:42

Bright blue aga sounds wonderful,btw!

mum2015 · 11/03/2015 16:42

We had a kitchen with blue painted cabinets in my office. It looked great in a corner of large office and when I was getting kitchen in my apartment, i was determined to get same colour. I have been looking at it for months and thought that is a lovely bright colour to live with. Why get a boring neutral colour. So I got similar blue kitchen. I regretted it so much and such an expensive mistake. What looked nice in a small corner of huge office looked so daunting in my small apartment kitchen.

I have left that house 7 years ago and still when see it in photos, I regret getting such a bright colour for something permanent. Luckily I had neutral colours in bedrooms and could always change colour/mood by changing curtains, paintings, bedding and flowers in those rooms.

mum2015 · 11/03/2015 16:50

One plus point was though it didnt look old at all as compared to everything else in the house. A bright colour looks new for years.

Sonnet · 11/03/2015 16:56

I have a golden yellow aga teamed with teracotta and sage green. Units are cream - I love it as it is so warm and welcoming

pashmina696 · 11/03/2015 17:10

5 years on i don't regret my blue/green glass splashbacks, i actually just painted the other kitchen wall the same colour. my units and floor are neutrals. if you like a colour go for it.

jamaisjedors · 11/03/2015 18:45

Why not have more neutral units and then strong colour on the walls? We have white units but a curry yellow (India Yellow F&B) on the walls and everyone says how great it looks.

If we are sick of it in a few years (it's been 3 now) we can repaint and won't have to change everything.

TeddyBee · 11/03/2015 18:57

I wanted yellow wall cupboards, but they stopped making them :( I have yellow wallpaper on that wall instead, but haven't had it long so can't say If I will get bored of it!

Agrestic · 11/03/2015 21:38

All the greens with orange accessories sounds fab. Zinxie sums it up perfectly.

I was going for a white kitchen but have just purchased a duck egg blue one instead. It was a spur of the moment purchase, ex display and an absolute bargain. I have no idea how to make the colour look a bit more modern though?

mayfridaycomequickly · 11/03/2015 21:53

I'm already trapped in this dilemma and we're not getting the kitchen done til next year! How about a coloured island?

If you have a kitchen with a large amount of colour in it, how do you feel about it years on?
mayfridaycomequickly · 11/03/2015 21:56

Agrestic - our (unfinished) bathroom is lime and orange (accessories and towels etc) and it looks fab - really bright and fresh :-)

Zinxie · 12/03/2015 10:38

agrestic maybe if you post pics we can chat about making your kitchen look more modern?

Off top of my head it occurs to me a bit of 'industrial chic' might provide the contrast you need.
