Hello all,

We live in an edwardian semi detached 3 storey property that has two floors of bedrooms so we feel a bit top heavy at the moment. THerefore we are planning a ground floor rear and side extension which will give us a large open plan kitchen, living, dining room, with roof lantern. WE are keeping it in the style of the edwardian era as much as possible with the same window designs, french doors not bifold and wooden floors and an open fire. Downstairs we will also have a seperate dining room, living room, utility and WC (exsisting).

We do not want to strip away character so when looking at kitchens its been really difficult. However we have seen many high gloss white handless kitchens in period properties which look elegent and highlights the character of the building. So, we think we have decided on that style with wooden floors but unsure about worktops?

Some suggestions have been

plain black granite
white granite
white corian

please do you have photos or ideas/suggestions?

Many thanks
Lucy

I have matt white handleless in my 1930s semi with wooden floors. I have a mixture of laminate (for my 'working' worktop) and quartz for a largish island unit in a very, very pale grey. If I'd be able to afford all of the work surfaces in quartz, I would have gone with that, it is beautiful and I think it really sets off the kitchen.

mandy214 that sounds lovely. Do you find the quartz easy to look after? does the light colour make it more prone to staining? If you have any photos i would love to see.

I will take one tonight. It has been really easy to look after, it has probably been in for 4 months now. Had a bit of a panic when 5yr old daughter scribbled off her paper by accident with a biro all over it but it came off! I don't put hot pans on it and always use a chopping board but have spilt red wine / orange juice / chilli oil / balsamic vinegar on it clumsy household and it hasn't marked.

We have grey quartz too (different style of kitchen) but I think it would work in the room you have described. It doesn't stain. Get samples, though, don't take my word for it! I'd be more worried about white corian to be honest.

Oh, and for looking after - just a clean with a microfibre cloth.

thank you! i hadn't thought of grey that that could be the best option as darker than white

I yhink I'm changing my mind towards a painted wooden kitchen again as a) I wonder if it ages better and won't go out of style and b) can put black granite with it and I've always had a good experience with black granite

We're in the process of planning a white handleless kitchen for our extension. I want a wooden floor but Dh is worried about leaking dishwashers - seeing the builder on Saturday to discuss the finer details. If wood is rejected then it's porcelain tiles that look like slate.

We're having quartz work tops, I like the black flecky ones, didn't want anything too light.
