Hi the cistern of my toilet has broken (a plastic lever which controls the infill has snapped) so that the cistern keeps filling with water. It's in my ensuite so it's so noisy thst the only thing I could think of doing was to turn water off. But now I'm worried that I've messed up my heating, and also I'm freezing so if my water is turned off does that mean I can't have heating on either? Or does it work independently? Be so grateful for your advice. TIA

you can still have the heating on.

Look under your cistern for a service valve on the pipe, probably with a screw-head showing, or possibly a blue plastic lever.

If you can tie up the remains of the arm with a bit of string or an elastic band, the filling valve will shut. Can you see it here?

Hiya wow you're brilliant ive turned off water to toilet only so peace reigns again and I can turn on heating tonight.
The valve/lever is all plastic ive managed to get one end off the float but I haven't got enough strength in my hand to get the other piece off. It doesn't look like any in your pic so I'll take it and photos to b and q (think its cheapy toilet) tomorrow and see if I can find anything similar. I tried tying the pieces together but it's snapped in really awkward place :-( it's prob a 2 second job!
I hope you don't mind me bothering you, but you are such a great help. Many many thanks TC

does it look like this?

ladybird69 · 09/03/2015 22:12

Hiya Piglet. No it's a plastic cylinder fitted inside the cistern with another moveable plastic cylinder attached via the broken lever and when the cistern fills up the attached cylinder rises to certain level where the water cuts off. I went to buildbase and b and q today and both said they've never seen anything like it!!!! I showed them pics but I don't know how to post pics on here for you, sorry.

you save the pictures onto your PC then go to the section "Images (up to 6 per day:" and browse to where you have put them, them include them in a Message on this thread.

Get the one with the brass shank. You will need to drain and sponge all the water out of the cistern. If the incoming pipe to the cistern is flexible it eill be a bit easier.

Okey dokey good idea. Plastic is Sooo crap eh but it sums up this house! Moved in last year and had nothing but trouble. Thank you so much for your help.
