Anyone have plantation shutters on bay window (box bay?)

We have had some fitted and am really unhappy, other than them being dripping with mastic and screw holes everywhere the internal frames can be seen cutting across the windows from the outside in the corners.

It looks awful and the fitters have told us that that is completely normal. We have very special thin upvc frames apparently which is utter bollocks. Luckily we haven't paid full amount so they are 'trying' to come up with a solution we will be happy with!!!

Does anyone else (lovely mumsnetters) have them and don't have this problem? Was thinking of asking them if we can have ones which are hinged in the corners so don't have to have this huge cumbersome frame?

Bloody got recommendation off of Mumsnet too!!

Do you have pictures

Madamecastafiore · 08/03/2015 20:19

Will take some tomorrow in the light.

Maybe we just didn't understand how much of profile would be seen. Wouldn't have had them if we had been made aware that the frames would cover part of the glass.

It's not the only issue. One frame isn't straight and its fitted across a granite sill so is completely obvious and the ones that cover the French doors (in the bay) have huge gaps between the doors and the frames at the bottom in one corner and the top on the other side.

They look fab from a long way away when shut though!

Photos attached.

Really grateful if anyone could tell me if this normal.

No experience of that type of blind - but the holes and mastic look terrible. I would be asking them to re-make them or take them away and refund in full.

SingSongSlummy · 09/03/2015 14:31

They look really bad - we had some fitted in a Victorian bay window, with upvc frame and our definitely don't look like that! Why is there mastic? Why are there holes??

Madamecastafiore · 09/03/2015 18:05

Thanks chaps, we have paid 50% and are with holding the rest until they are perfect.

They agree there are some 'cosmetic' issues but disagree that the frames should not be visible from outside.

There is one on our window over the sink too which is 10mm out one end and as its on a granite window sill it's really obvious.

DH is quite willing to tell them that if they can't fit them right into the window frames then they can take them out and we'll get someone else to do them. But I can't believe it's normal that the frames cover the actual glass in the right angles.

If they don't come up with a solution I'll post their name on here so all you guys steer clear.

I've seen them in box bays and definitely not like that

Did they measure up?

I would be asking for immediate rectification and withholding full payment as you are doing

Yes name and shame

I had these on my old house in every room and they looked great inside and out, including a large double box bay window. Nothing like what you have posted. There is no reason for them to look like this other than poor fitting.

voscar · 09/03/2015 20:21

Here are some inside and out photos.

And last message...we had over 20 windows in that house, all different sizes and not one had mastic or holes in the shutters.

Fecking pain in the arse to clean btw!! Grin

SoMuchForSubtlety · 09/03/2015 20:39

Who did yours voscar? They look good and I'm trying to find plantation shutters at the moment (sorry for the slight hijack OP)...

Madamecastafiore · 09/03/2015 20:50

The cleaner has been given instructions ??

Wow yours look so much better than ours. The mastic and the holes are a joke and the guy agreed that they would be sorted but sometimes you get some run off on mastic apparently. I don't understand why they put mastic through there and not have some sort of bead in the right angled join, FUCK ME thinking abut it they shouldn't need anything if it has been measured correctly as the right angles should just meet up completely.

Aaarrrgggghhhhhhh!

I have shutters envy.

If your search Mumsnet and shutters they come up as a recommendation.

I do not want to out them before they put mine right but will scream it from the rooftops once all is well.

Thank you for all of your replies.

Subtly - it's been 10 years and we don't live in that house anymore, but I think it was this firm www.aspenshutters.co.uk/photo-gallery/

SoMuchForSubtlety · 11/03/2015 18:36

Thanks voscar!

Celeriacacaca · 11/03/2015 19:09

Our neighbour has just had them installed in their box bay onto 20yo+ uPVC windows and they look fantastic - they fit the space perfectly with no disproportionate view of shutters' frame or edge visible. No sign of mastic or anything else either, I'm afraid.

How have you paid so far? If credit card, maybe worth registering dispute with your card provider perhaps?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 11/03/2015 19:21

I have a huge 8 window bay in my front room and have just had shutters fitted . They look lovely - now!

I rejected the first set of shutters that were fitted because the rail that splits the shutter in two was supposed to match the way the window was in two sections and it didn't. The company we used replaced them for me. ( I also had to reject the second set that they delivered because I could tell before they were even unwrapped that they had been made wrong!)

We got there in the end but I was lucky that although the company were a bit inept they were decent people who didn't want to rip me off.

I wouldn't pay if you are unhappy with the shutters or the way they have been fitted.
