New kitchen - you can save a fortune if you do your research and planning

I just wanted to share my recent experience of looking for a new kitchen as it may help others. For ages I have wanted bi-folding doors to go out onto my patio from my kitchen but this would mean having to remove some of my kitchen units along with granite worktop and expensive flooring which were all put in 9 years ago when I first moved in.

I was told by lots of people that I would need to get a whole new kitchen and have it re-planned. Friends thought I was mad getting a new kitchen as my own looked really nice. I spent hour researching best kitchens with German ones always coming out on top. I got quotes from 18k to 25k from 2 local kitchen design companies and John Lewis to supply and fit a new kitchen. Far too expensive as I am using my existing appliances and the electric and plumbing supplies are already in place.

I then read on a forum (sorry mumsnet it was Piston Heads) that Crown Imperial (who did my original kitchen) do a design similar to a well know German company. Having tracked them down and working with their fantastic designer I have managed to get an even better kitchen by leaving most of the layout as it currently stands. She has added in some great new additions like a larder cupboard and a wine fridge and simply by just tweaking the rest of the layout and replacing the old doors (and keeping the original carcases) with new white handle-less ones I have a really brilliant kitchen which is exactly what I wanted for less than half the lowest price I was being quoted. She has even planned cupboards around my large double fridge/freezer which the others said had to go as it was too large to fit.

I have sourced the bi-folding doors (excellent German ones) and the quartz worktop and glass splashback and got some brilliant bargains by shopping around and 'squeezing the pips' out of everyone.

Work starts in two weeks. Wish me luck!!!!!!!

Oh wow, that sounds great. Thanks for sharing! I will store this info away as am hoping to replace my own kitchen within the next two years. Good luck with your work!

Thanks for sharing. Can I ask where you got your bi-folds from? I haven't started looking yet but will need them within the next year.

Was it 9k then? Do you have any pics?

I got quotes from John Lewis and a few local firms, then after loads of research ordered a painted oak kitchen from DIY-kitchens in a farrow and Ball painted shade - borrowed light. It was a quarter of the JL price.
Gets delivered 25th March, so rather nervous.
For just over £5,000 I have 2 larder units, 3x900 pan drawers, 1100 corner sink unit, 600 drawer/ recyling bin cabinet, 2 x 500 glass wall units, 2 x 400 wall units, 2 x 600 wall units. One oven/ microwave housing. Plus all required end panels, plinths, cornices etc. I have ordered 900 high wall units as the extra storage space will come in handy.

Agree it is worth shopping around and taking your time to decide. I have changed my mind several times.

Crystal - sounds like you did brilliantly well...pls tell me more about your quartz!

Bi-folds from a company called Express Bi-folding doors in Redhill,Surrey. Have Showrooms around the country. I only bought them because they are Schuco Doors which came highly recommended. Came out at 4k for 2.5m wide x 2.3m high supply and fit. Could get cheaper but these are the one of the best and it is not worth skimping on something so important.

I needed a structural engineer because I need an opening made on a load bearing wall so I need a steel support. Also need to factor in the cost of the builder to make the opening.

Tollygunge - will post some before and after pics when it is done. It came in at under 9k at 6.5k to replace all the doors and add 3 new wall cupboards. A larder cupboard with pull out, two lots of drawer pan cupboards under hob and cooker. This also includes the cost of the glass splashback which came in at £1.5k.

Lelivre - The Quartz I choose is a non branded one which is white with silver sparkles. Silistone is the dogs (B) and it came in at 3.5k. The non branded was £1.9k. I currently have granite but it is black and shows up everything.
