I can't afford to replace the worlds ugliest worktop as Id need a new sink/tap etc.

So I thought about those big sheets, stuck down then grouted. Is it possible to get it looking ok?

Where are you - are you much nearer to London than us? Our very highly qualified heating engineer (plumber) charges £45 an hour for the first hour then 25 per hour for larger jobs - so 70 an hour is outrageous.

I'll bloody do it for some cake Grin

I'll do it for cake! Have you considered vinyl tiles? Cheaper and don't need grout and much easier to fit.

noddyholder · 26/02/2015 12:42

No it will look scrappy

noddyholder · 26/02/2015 12:44

What sort of work top is it and is it chipped etc?

What about really large tiles instead of mosaic ones then the grout lines would be kept to a minimum? I think it is advised to use epoxy grout on kitchen worksurfaces as well as it prevents bacteria growing in the grout lines.

If you do a pinterest or google image search quite a few people use large granite tiles on worktops especially in the USA as it is a cheap way to get the granite look.

I've used a kitchen fitter to change worktops, install cabinets, fit a new sink and taps. His rate is £125 a day in London.... Unless your kitchen is huge I can't see it being more than 2 days work tops.

Put up a post on Rated People.com and see who responds. If you check their references you should have no trouble.

eBay is your friend, buy used worktop with hole for sink already cut. You might even be able to get a sink and tap although you can get a basic 1.5 bowl sink from B&Q for about £40, a 1 bowl is probably cheaper if that's all you need. I think our tap was only £40 too.

Find a tradesman who can also fit the sink.

Please don't tile it! It will probably work out similar price to cheap laminate and you will hate it as it will look shite. Save up another couple of months if need be and do it right.
