Got a job offer in Warwick ... Can I afford to live there?

It's shift work and I just checked rental prices and they're so high. I'll be on £22,000 as a single person without kids. The shift work may be a problem in terms of getting a housemate as I need a quiet environment.

It's also not my first choice job - I am still waiting to hear back off another job :-( It's stressing me out as a I'm in no position to turndown a guaranteed job but the rent is pricing me out of it. Any advice???

What other outgoings will you have? With take home of around £1400 I'd have thought a deposit for something modest would only take a couple of years?

Coventry is soo depressing i know grew up there. I dont care if i get slammed for it. If cov rent is cheaper stay on the outskirts kenilworth is nice the inner city will suck away your soul its sooo dull. I think the worst part is the architecture or lack of, and ppl are damn rude. Dont say hello to anyone most likely tell you to f off charming huh?. I would say go on right move and you'll get an idea of costs in different areas. Warwickshire is beautiful compared to cov.

I have a car and obviously living costs and student loan repayments. I've emailed people about the £400 rooms but they won't take me because of the shift work disturbing them.

I'm more receptive to slumming it for longer in Bristol as I like the area and have friends there also trying to get careers off the ground. Warwick is gorgeous but the thought of trying to integrate with such unsociable hours is a bit concerning.

Ah what a pain about those rooms.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 26/02/2015 19:42

Having lived in both Warwick and Bristol (in Bristol now), Bristol is much more expensive in terms of rent but if I was young, single and working unsociable hours I would choose bristol, absolutely no contest.

And Anya is right, Coventry is soul destroying Wink

Check out gumtree. Earlsdon is nice enough, as is finham.

Is rugby too far? Or Southam?

Arsenal123 · 26/02/2015 20:02

I think rugby is just a little too far for my on calls.

I'm open to any living arrangements so long as I can sleep when I need to.

That's what I'm thinking - Bristol is the place to be given my circumstances. Obviously income is a bit of a constraint.

i don't know much about this site but is this too expensive £450 pcm shared house 2 other professionals?

very close to warwick hospital

www.spareroom.co.uk/flatshare/warwickshire/warwick/3159921#map

they have a few more on that site but this seemed like the nicest one.

anya79 · 26/02/2015 23:04

search the site there are actually a lot more you may like and cheaper ones too.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 27/02/2015 06:45

The shared rooms people are linking to might be £400 or so, but that includes bills. That seems perfectly doable on £22000 per annum, with enough left over for savings etc.

Arsenal123 · 27/02/2015 17:36

That's true but nobody seems to want to live with a shift worker.

It's a shame, I know someone who wouldn't mind at all and is looking for a house share, but he's nowhere near Warwick at the moment.

Mrscog · 28/02/2015 07:29

I can't imagine living with a shift worker being that disruptive?! Or am I being naive?

Arsenal123 · 28/02/2015 07:52

To be honest it shouldn't be. I guess it depends on the individuals though
