What do I need for my open fire???

So the room had a 1960's fireplace that has been ripped out.

We now have the hole with the special heat brick bits in it.

I have a cast iron surround
The errr front bit that stops the coal falling out with the drawer bit in it (what is this called)
Obviously I need some sort of hearth to make the concrete bit look pretty.

Do I need something else to sit inside the hole??? If so what is it called.

I have googled but it takes in fancy terms etc. etc. I need an idiots diagram!

So you have a grate with and a draw under? Do you have a fireguard? A back panel to regulate the air flow?

2 secs and I'll find you a pic.

RandomMess · 21/02/2015 22:21

The bit that stops it falling out is the grate or fire basket. There should be an ash pan underneath.
I'm not much help though as I thought we could get an fire place but in the shop today we were told we couldn't. We're taking out a 90s gas fire. Am now confused by hearths.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 21/02/2015 22:24

LadySib's left hand PIC is what I wanted. Sniff :(

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 21/02/2015 22:24

Need a larger fireguard as well as a grate/fire basket. My chimney sweep told me off for not having one. It stops any spits setting fire to the floor Blush

RandomMess · 21/02/2015 22:27

But we only have the drawer front to get to the ask pan, no ash pan.

So is there something I need to get in addition to an ash pan? Is there something between the ash pan and the coals/wood?

The fire in my slug room dining room is like 1. I have a log burner in the sitting room.

fire guard

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 21/02/2015 22:29

Ash pan at the bottom. The the grate above. Nothing else. Fire guard too for when you leave the room. What's on the hearth, tiles?

GiddyOnZackHunt · 21/02/2015 22:30

Oh LadySyb, sloe gin, Chuckie Egg and now your fireplace. We should be RL mates :)

Aimey · 21/02/2015 22:30

Before you go any further, check that the chimney draws ok and doesn't leak into bedrooms/etc above. You get special smoke matches (proper name escapes me for now) that you can light to test this. If it leaks, you're into needing a lining (either stainless steel or coating) and building regs apply. We made the mistake of not doing this till we'd installed fireplace, insert, vermiculite down the back, fire rope seal, etc, then had to blooming' sort out lining...

Hearth has building regs applying too, not just about looking pretty, fires are dangerous for carbon monoxide as well as the obvious burning issues/chimney fires etc. Not saying you have to spend loads, but you do need to understand the regs. A chimney sweep would be able to tell you how well your fireplace complies.

RandomMess · 21/02/2015 22:34

The hearth was ripped out so it's just the concrete that was under the original hearth tiles.

I don't have a grate (assuming this is something in the fire area not the semi circular thing at the front - what is that called?).

Yeah I will get a chimney sweep out before I consider using it!!! Just want to get the bits we need IYSWIM.

Hey, if you're in the East Midlands I'd meet you for a glass of wine Grin

Chimney sweep will do all of that, Aimey Smile

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 21/02/2015 22:36

The chimney sweep will be able to tell you what you need. It's a good idea to get the cover (see pic 1, the curved cover at the bottom which covers the dust pan) as I think it helps to control the air flow.

RandomMess · 21/02/2015 22:41

aH SO \I HAVE A COVER AND SURROUND AND DRAWER TO GO IN FRONT OF THE ASH DRAWER
