Extension help, kitchens??

Hi we are in the process of getting some drawings done for an extension which involves knocking through into the garage and taking out another internal wall to create an open plan kitchen diner with family area. Its a big project and I have never done anything like this before. I would love any tips from old pros as to how to make the whole thing easier. In particular any suggestions about choosing and planning a kitchen. Many thanks!

We are about to do something similar. Try Ikea's kitchen/room planner to help sketch things out and houzz.co.uk for ideas. And search the MN property/DIY threads! Good luck!

Spend time on rightmove stealing ideas and download other people's plans from your local council website, helps me Grin

We found a lovely local kitchen place who did the design for us. They just asked us what our must haves were. I'm so glad we went to them rather than a big DIY store (to be honest we were told to avoid b&q etc).

The main thing was they thought of things we would never have thought of, like storage solutions. We played about online but I would never have been able to come up with the kitchen we have now by ourselves. We also hired an architect to do proper plans as we did an extension on the back of the house, you may not need this I'm guessing, just a good builder.

The best thing to do will be to firstly ask around friends and family for any builders that they may have used, from there you'll find that in most cases these builders will have good contacts or probably sub-contract the work out for the kitchen design and fit.

In terms of getting ideas for the kitchen, it'll be worth having a look around the kitchen studios around you. No doubt there will be a few and if you decide to venture out you'll be given varied price ranges.

Also spend some time on Houzz, the ideabooks and project pictures are mostly from companies and some of those come with reviews too. Get an idea of what they can do and a phonecall never hurt anyone, just don't agree to anything before your happy.
