bungalow vs semidetached

Given a choice would you buy a bungalow or a semidetached house. All other parameters are similar and they have come on same street for sale

  • Same size and orientation garden
  • same square foot area though bungalow has conservatory but semidetached has proper dining room.
  • semidetahced has more extension possibilities, as for bungalow, need to demolish conservatory to do the extension. both has lofts which can be converted. We are family of three so might not extend at all.

also any idea which will be easier to sell or rent in future in case we need to move after few years.

Detached, whether bungalow or not.
Not just for old folks, but I wish that my DP's had downsized to a Bungalow, a few years ago, they're struggling in their house now.

I love my bungalow, so easy to keep clean and tidy as stuff doesn't accumulate at the bottom of the stairs waiting! One plug lets me Hoover the whole place as well (I do dream of a roomba though)

Really pleased for you - bungalows are so versatile, it can grow with you!

mum2015 · 25/02/2015 15:33

Thanks. Today I saw that it hasnt yet been removed from property websites and for a minute my heart sank with the thought of loosing it if someone puts higher offer. In the beginning I wasnt that keen on it but now I dont want to loose it.

Hubby says dont get carried away and have patience, it still belongs to owner till we exchange.

I think I like semi, mainly because of the fact that the living area is more separated from the bedrooms. I usually go bed two hours later than my husband and i like to set my washing machine to start at 5am (so clothes are ready to hand at 8). I think it may be a problem if the bedrooms are on the same floor as the kitchen.

Another one here in favour of bungalows, I'm in my 4th now. They are usually tired and need refreshing, therefore reasonable to buy. When finished mine are snapped up and give a good profit.
The present one has a large loft ripe for extending into. And not everyone in a bungalow is old!
I love them for being easy to keep clean and maintain. Keeping the windows, fascias, soffits and guttering clean is easy. No running up and down stairs all the time either. No creaky stairs or creaky floorboards in the bedrooms either.
In a detached obviously no party walls and hearing all sorts of noise at odd times of the day or night.

You've made a good choice OP, hope it all goes well.

Really lovely house, OP! Good luck.

Nice properties, where you live!

We have bought a bungalow to renovate & move into - I can't wait!

I did grow up in a bungalow & just havnt gelled with living in a house at all.

I think they are more versatile ie ours is 3 bed & we are going to use the lounge as a toy room but it could function equally as well as a bedroom & then the smallest bedroom could be turned into a computer room when DC is teenage years.

It's going to be our home for life.

Good luck OP & here's to a smooth purchase for you.

The picture of bugalow i attached isnt the one I am buying but it will look like that once I paint it white from outside and tidy up the unkept garden in front of it.

The good thing about the semi I was looking at was that it had extra dining room so around 11x13 ft size room extra as compared to the bungalow but what won my heart was that bungalow had a wider and not so deep garden as compared to semi which had narrow but quite long garden.

In my search of last 9 months I didnt view any bungalows (none came to market in my budget). Also I live in a street of apartments and houses so didnt see so many in day to day life and they looked cute and funny to me at first. I wasnt sure if I am doing a right thing to choose it over semi, but now all I can say is those who are still searching, dont ignore them. Go and have a look, you may like them.

And big thanks to all who gave their views to help me think of pros and cons. I still think for a bigger family with teenager children a semi would be better choice but to my situation bungalow is alright.

Wish me luck that all goes well with the sale formalities and I dont loose it in the process.

Detached bungalow without hesitation

CatsAreLikeChocolates · 26/02/2015 10:32

Yay! I love a happy ending. Fingers crossed you'll be moving in before you know it.

mum2015 · 13/05/2015 14:33

Very happy to report back that all sale formalities are complete and we will be moving in by end of this month. Thanks again to all who replied to my thread and let me think through all pros and cons.

I have been looking at other bungalows to get inspiration for decorating ours and yes lots of them aren't big grand houses but they definitely are lovely pretty houses.
