Really disappointed that white metro tiles white sanitaryware don't match

We've just spent literally the last 4 weeks having our main bathroom refitted. It's an edwardian house and I chose heritage period style fittings and the room is half tiled in white metro tiles.

The sink and toilet have literally just gone in and I feel like crying.

The toilet etc look warm white against the metro tiles which look an almost blue white and very cold. Too late now but any advice about a colour scheme to bring it together?
It's mainly going to be used by my 4 sons and has a large tall cupboard in it to paint.
My plan until today was blackened f+b on skirting etc with unit in lamp room grey and walls in down pipe.

Have you grouted the tiles? If not, if you use a grey / putty coloured grout, it may change the impression of the tiles and not be too "white with white".

I'm not a fan of coloured wood work, ours are always white but I think the rest of your colour scheme sounds lovely. I'd be tenpted to colour match the paint rather than use F&B in a room to be used by 4 boys. My F&B walls haven't stood up very well to 1 boy (and 2 girls) nevermind 4 boys Wink!

Yes grout is grey . I thought blackened was a shade of white with a grey tinge? I think maybe an obviously off white on skirting boards is best next to the toilet and tiles?
And yes maybe I should colour match. This is my first foray into farrow and ball and I've been sucked into believing the hype!

With children in the mix you should should be using F&B modern emulsion. Don't overdo the grey or it could look like a bathroom for submariners.

If you're looking for a grey based white, then I suggest Strong White from F&B. Blackened is lovely but it's definitely grey.

Poor you Cynthia - have you done the floor yet? What are you going for? How about taking some pics and taking them into your nearest F&B shop, so they can match exactly and bring out the existing colour. Where did you get your metro tiles from? I am doing exactly the same - Burlington sanitaryware with white metro tiles with white grout.

There are lots of variations in "white" glazes and unless you put the two together before you chose them, it would not be wise to assume they match. Although I am a fan of grey, I also really like Mizzle by F and B in a bathroom. It looks really good in our Edwardian style bathroom and is warmer than a great. I love it with orange towels.

obsessedwithinteriors · 20/02/2015 21:58

MMM - presume you mean taking some tiles with you to the showrooms and holding them up against the sanitaryware?

Devora · 20/02/2015 22:25

Be warned that Blackened - though beautiful - can look really blue in some lights. I have it in my bedroom where it looks pale blue. Strong White is a lovely neutral very light grey - but it only looks grey if contrasted against pure white - put against darker colours it looks white.

Have you looked at Cornforth White?

Though I'm a huge F&B fan, I'm not sure I'd use it in a bathroom with 4 kids. I'm slightly regretting I used it in heavy traffic areas (though it has stood up great in other areas) as it doesn't take a lot of wiping/washing. Other posters have said Little Greene Intelligent Emulsion is much tougher. In my bathroom I have Homebase kitchen/bathroom paint in Putty which is a beautiful greige - looks fantastic against white tiles. However, in the intervening years Homebase seems to have mucked out with the colour and Putty is now a much paler cream.

How any of that helped with your mismatching whites I don't know, but your colour scheme ideas do sound lovely if that's any consolation!

I had a similar problem, but had checked before tiling, so I did a row of black tiles inbetween the shower tray and white tiles. Works as a distraction to the eye, but no help to you. Sorry.

The suite is heritage Dorchester I think. Metro tiles are from topps tiles mixed with floor tiles called Stamford. They have plenty of colour in.
I'm now moving towards F and B light blue / skylight with strong white as suggested above. I might colour match but actually it's not a big room so the cost wouldn't be too outrageous.

And it's an expensive lesson learned. I've assumed a lot of things I wish I'd checked to be honest.
