Can we deviate from the 'bathroom uniform' that seems to have been imposed?

There seems to have been a rule passed by the Bathroom Police that all bathrooms have to look essentially the same now. You know, big beige tiles over the floor and walls, not a scrap of wall left untiled, enormous showers, very 'hotel' finish. I don't dislike this, but am concerned it will date the bathroom and I don't want my room to look like every other bathroom. We are thinking of 5 years before selling. Any advice?

I also love metro tiles think they are timeless have been using since I started and I am OLD! I think a really plain but quality white bathroom with either an interesting floor or a huge vintage mirror can look great. But I agree with have what you love. I have a black oiled shower fitting and gold taps waiting for an opportunity so what do I know Grin

You were right! Plants were exactly what my bathroom needed to pull it together :)

I've just done a bathroom in, what I hope, is a fairly timeless style.
Walk in shower with large, white bumpy tiles.
Tongue and groove to waist height with painted walls.
We had a vanity unit made by a carpenter and put marble on the top with an upstand.
Freestanding modern bath, very plain sanitary wear.
Limestone floor.

I'm really pleased with it but it does look rather plain.

Melting, how about some colour on the walls? I personally love my coloured ceiling which comes half way down the walls as far as the tiles. Also a pretty cool light.

Yes, I think I will. What would you suggest?
The T&G is pavillion grey and the walls are strong white.
It's very tasteful but not exciting.

Teddy, I love the picture ledges. I'd never think to use them in a bathroom but they work really well.

Whilst we're on bathrooms, can I bemoan (and warn others) of fancy ' contemporary' toilets. Our square shaped fancy toilet is:
a. Uncomfortable
b. The seat is always breaking (been through 3 in 2 years)
c. Really hideous to clean around seat
d. You don't have a choice of seats as needs to fit that weird shape

I LOVE my cheap 'normal' toilet and the expensive-but-reduced-to-a-fiver seat. I would pay a hundred quid for that seat. It is so comfortable and very easy to clean.

I like grey with gold/ golden yellow, although a lot of people put it with navy/ hot pink. Picture frames? Is there any wood on your contemporary bath? Adding more wood (golden tones)? Eg. shelving . What colour is the marble?

Thanks! They were in my living room originally, but I swapped them for white ones and had no idea what to do with the old black ones. Then I put the floor down and had a light bulb moment! We only wash the kids in this bathroom, so no showers and that wall doesn't get splashed much.

Couldn't agree more about beige tiles.

Can I suggest you look at houzz.co.uk. They have loads of interesting bathrooms - the ones in the USA are often very different from ours.

Warning! Houzz is addictive Grin
