Do you live in Norfolk? What's it like?

Contemplating a move there, not sure which areas to look at, or which to avoid!

I'd like to be within easy reach of the sea, have been to Yarmouth, Caister etc.

Close to a good 6th form would be good, as well as close to shops.

Any ideas?

I'm near Diss so not a huge help really! Personally I wouldn't want to live in Yarmouth but if you want to be on the coast North Norfolk is lovely. Near Diss has lovely villages and there are 6th forms in Eye and Diss which friends are happy with but mine are still primary age. We are mid way between Norwich, Ipswich and Bury st Edmunds so have a choice of shopping within about 1/2 hr if there is anything we can't get locally.

MrsJacksonAvery · 17/02/2015 22:37

Hmm... Would probably avoid Yarmouth, tbh. How close to the sea? Sheringham High is doing well and has a sixth form - and the coast around there is lovely. The 'better' schools tend to be around Norwich and south Norfolk.

What sort of shops? Little ones to potter around or high street names?

Feel free to ask - have lived in most corners of the county at some point!

queenofthepirates · 17/02/2015 22:41

Avoid the whole county, move to Suffolk, we're much more hospitable.

whataboutbob · 18/02/2015 20:02

Are the people of Norfolk inhospitable then? Just lurking, no intention of moving there but recently did some family research and found Dad's ancestry goes back to a village in the broads.

Another one from Diss here. We relocated from south London 6 years ago and love it. Yarmouth is nice to visit but it's very typical traditional seaside. I wouldn't want to live there. If you love the sea Southwold is much nicer (but more expensive). Winterton is also very nice.

I love Norfolk but the only thing I will say is if you can't drive you are at the mercy of the not so great transport and ever late trains which might be a thought for non driving teens. I'm fully prepared to be taxi for dd in the next few years!

Also local jobs (outside of Norwich) tend to be very low paid. I had a very good career in London and did it for a while in norwich too but hated the commute in etc so then decided to sacrifice pay to work locally in jobs like village gardening shops and hotels etc.

Overall it's been a great move.

QueenOfCats · 18/02/2015 22:47

Thanks for the advice Smile

I'd not actually live in Yarmouth, have been through Thetford which seems lovely.

Will have a look at Diss I think.

I do drive so that shouldn't be a problem, didn't think about non driving teen though so great point made there.

It'll be a big change from living in London but the difference in property prices is huge.

The schools in Thetford are not good and it is seen as "rough" - for Norfolk, not exactly the hood! Diss is good but not a huge amount happens - last year there was a story on the front page of the Diss Express that a tortoise had got stuck in a sundial.

Fairylea · 18/02/2015 23:04

Grin that is absolutely true.....!

My dh comes from Thetford and he wouldn't move back there. He thinks it is quite rough - we still go there regularly. It's about 18 miles from Diss. It's our nearest mcdonalds!

bettyboop1970 · 18/02/2015 23:12

Aylsham good, Holt very quaint, avoid Great Yarmouth not very naice! Holme, Burnham market v posh.

bettyboop1970 · 18/02/2015 23:23

Yep Thetford has a bad reputation!

Showy · 18/02/2015 23:32

Noooooo to Thetford. I have lived there, DH works there sometimes (police officer) and just nooooooooo. Driving through it is nice and a relief when you don't have stop.

North Norfolk is lovely. South Norfolk is lovely. But other areas of Norfolk have their benefits too. What do you like? Quaint villages, market towns, cities? Shopping or nature? Both? Any particular hobbies you have or would like? What sort of transport do you require? Links to London or just any old where? Do you have a budget and a list of wants?

Norfolk is fabulous. It has everything and no motorways. We are massively hospitable and anybody from Suffolk is lying on account of their bitterness at not living in Norfolk.

Nah, only joking. Suffolk's lovely too.

Showy · 18/02/2015 23:33

I must admit that in a few places people get a little fed up with locals being priced out of the market and homes being snapped up by people from That London. But once you've been here 35 years, we let that go and accept you.

I'm with queenofthepirates! Grin

And Southwold is bloody well in Suffolk thank you!

Fairylea · 19/02/2015 07:10

:) I know Southwold is in Suffolk. I was just trying to think of nice seaside places in the general area.... sorry!

Are you watching Location atm? In Norfolk. Will be on +1 at 9pm.

ragged · 20/02/2015 17:50

No 6th form in Aylsham, but bus service not bad to Paston, I guess.
I would find 6th forms I liked, OP, and plan from there.
