FENSA Question

Hi, I've had a quote from a local firm for windows, they don't appear to be FENSA registered though. On his quote he's put '£103 for certificate'

Can anyone explain to me what this means?

Do I need to get the council to check?

Sorry if it's a daft question but I don't have a clue! Thanks.

I don't know about windows, but I suspect it means he has to pay for someone to inspect and certify that it meets Building Regulations.

There may be info on your local council website.

Thanks, I've had a look on the site and it doesn't say, I've tried to ring them too but no luck getting through! I'll keep trying.

I think pigletjohn is right - some larger companies are already 'registered' with the council and are therefore allowed to put new windows in without getting a separate certificate. If this is a smaller firm they probably haven't registered (it will cost money) so need to get Building Regs out to check the work at the end is up to scratch.

Could it be that he is a member of the Certass scheme? Membership enables installers to self-certify that their work adheres to building regulations. If you come to sell your property in the future, a Certass Certificate is accepted by the legal profession as an alternative to FENSA.

I think the installer is not a member of any self-certification scheme, which would explain paying someone else to inspect and certify.

From his website he appears to focus on aluminium commercial windows really. He said he does do residential houses but his work is mainly businesses now. He seemed a nice chap and was shocked at the state of our windows now. Said they were clearly a DIY job, and a bad DIY job at that!
