I'd like to paint ours, without it getting chipped really fast, or get it covered with metal, possibly. So which is the best doorstep paint or paint protector, and who does metal doorstep wrapping and how much does it cost?

Fired earth used to sell a special paint for restoring Victorian Steps and paths. Don't know if they still so (was over 10 years ago!).

PigletJohn · 09/02/2015 13:28

do you mean the piece of wood at the bottom of the frame, or do you mean the stone or similar patch outside the front door?

SunTree · 09/02/2015 13:29

Piece of wood at bottom of frame.

I would have called it a brass threshold, but I have not been able to find one with that name. They were very common in Victorian and Edwardian homes.

The metal needs to be bent over into a close fit, that would be easier with a soft metal like copper. You can buy metal sheet cut to size, if I needed one I think I would look for a sheet metal worker or small business to bend it to shape for me. A few roofers might do it. The inside edge is folded over to tack or screw to the inside. Unless working on site they would need a profile template.

A place that sells kick plates might do them.

A hardwood threshold can be treated with woodstain. My front door is in a protected porch and lasts well, but the back door is exposed to the weather and I treat it much more often, using linseed oil. You need to sand it first, possibly dye with Colron, and preferably treat generously with wood preserver such as Cuprinol.

EDIT
Found one www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/products/door_furniture/kick_plates/298008/door_step_round_nose_stainless_steel/742756 Also available in 900mm (three feet) Brass or stainless (the URL might be wrong) seems to be a step nosing.

I also see Bull Nose versions, more what I'm used to. All listed under Kick Plates, which is what goes at the bottom of the face of the door, so not the same.

That kick plate you linked to! It's perfect! Can I fit it myself?

I know these guys sell them but I can't find them on the website - but call them and they will know what you mean.

minipie · 09/02/2015 14:02

Sorry when I say "sell them" I mean they sell metal threshold protectors (brass or steel) like Piglet describes. I'd definitely recommend going for one of them rather than constant repainting.

FunMitFlags · 09/02/2015 14:46

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you meant the step itself Blush

sacbina · 09/02/2015 15:11

I thought it meant step too. still on my list of things to do then, including finding some paint.

SunTree · 10/02/2015 22:28

minipie Thankyou, that's very useful.
