It's a Victorian house. The previous owners removed the fireplaces and chimneys so now it just has a fake mantelpiece with the wall painted black to look like a hole Confused

Would you remove them completely or maybe rebuild a mock chimney and install a gas fireplace/wood burner? Would that increase value?

I love having a fireplace!

We removed our chimney to give us more space in the bedroom and loft conversion. We left it downstairs for aesthetic reasons.

It is fairly easy to build a fake chimney breast and then put a firesurround in.

You can only have a flame fire if it's on the outside wall for venting.

You may have to spend around £300 to have your coving restored.

If you want a fireplace, go for it!

You can get HETAS engineers to come and do a survey. They'll be able to advise how easy it would be to restore it.

I love a real fire too.

If it is an external wall I'd have a woodburner installed. They're a nice focal point in a room.

Sadly not an external wall. Will contact HETAS and go from there. Would like a reclaimed fireplace if poss

I'd have a real wood burner. You don't need a chimney.

MrsWooster · 08/02/2015 10:19

we (well, heating chimney man) put a steel flue up through and out of the roof and reopened the fireplace. Cost a fortune tbh but worth it for a real fire!

RonaldMcFartNuggets · 08/02/2015 11:16

Viva, would you just have the funnel thing going up into the ceiling?

Problem is, if we put a new chimney or mock one in, it'll narrow the room and it's not massive anyway.

It would be nice to have a focal point like a woodburner, without taking up lots of space.

How about a free standing wood burner?

VivaLeBeaver · 08/02/2015 11:44

I've got a friend with a log burner and no chimney. Flue goes up and then out the wall. If yours isn't an external wall then it would need to keep going up and out the roof. So you'd need to think about the aesthetics of having it boxed in upstairs. But it's possible.

RonaldMcFartNuggets · 08/02/2015 15:09

I'm going to look into it as it takes up less room
