Knocking through to form kitchen/diner

We currently have a separate kitchen & dining room & then a garden room at the back of the house. We were contemplating knocking down the garden room & building an extension across the full width of the back & knocking through the kitchen & dining room to create a big space for a kitchen/diner/family room, plus separate study. We haven't scrapped that idea yet but are now looking at the cheaper option of knocking through from the kitchen to dining room to create just a kitchen/diner as we can open the French doos into to the garden room as it has a seating area facing the dining room & a study area out of view in the opposite corner. We also have a utility room by the study area. If we knocked through from the kitchen to the dining room this would create a room measuring 19' x 11'11. We were thinking of units all along the back wall (11'11) & then one cupboard width to form an L shape (as there is a chimney breast preventing more cupboards) We'd then put an island parallel to the back wall of units & then a dining room table parallel to the other side of the island. I would have liked a couple of breakfast chairs up to the island but I dont think there is enough space. Plus I like the islands where the work surface is higher at the back strip. What do you think? Do you think the room would look crammed. I can picture it as we pretty much have this set up at the moment but obviously we have the wall between the rooms & units running all the way to the window/back door. I'm not too worried about lack of cupboard space because we have a big utility where we'd out more cupboards in there to keep things we dont use regularly. Alng the other wall in the dining room we currently have a sideboard but we could out wall to floor cabinets there too if needs be but then would that look too weird in that space? Sorry if I've confused you!!!!

Thanks Thunder & very useful to see your floorplan. I really need to draw one up but can't be bothered...I started on graph paper last night but gave up. Where are you going to have your sink? We could add a big fridge/freezer next to the chimney breast in the dining room side of the room. Our units would be along the same wall as yours are (as current kitchen to right, dining room to left) & that measure 3.61m. We also have a playroom off the dining room left wall.

Aaahh just seen where your sink is. Our L is at opposite side but much smaller because of chimney breast. I'll try to finish the graph paper floorplan & will post.

Do you invite people over to eat often? I don't find kitchen/diners work well if you're entertaining. I don't like entertaining with all the cooking mess around us.

No not that often. If we get an island with the back section higher than the front then a lot of the mess would be hidden when we are sat down. It wouldn't bother me tbh.

Yes that's what me & hubby thought was a good idea after I'd drawn the floorplan. I didn't want a sink in an island but keeping it as it is & raising the back part of the counter would keep it looking tidier as any pots by the sink out of view!

And not keen in an island now as works butter keeping it to the window/door
