Is Matt the new gloss?

Right, making decisions about new(ish) kitchen. Getting new cabinets/doors, keeping old granite. DP reckons we should go for handleless gloss doors, I like the idea of light grey, matt doors with handles (bright white walls, bright accessories). Obviously I think my choice is best... but will I regret not going for the gloss? Kitchen guy (getting it fitted by small independent) says matt is the way to go these days, what do you think, mumsnetters?

Gloss is a nightmare to keep clean. If you wipe it down it still needs polishing afterwards! I think it's a bit dated too.

MrsBertMacklin · 05/02/2015 21:40

I preferred Luke.

TurnOverTheTv · 05/02/2015 21:41

I like Luke.

TurnOverTheTv · 05/02/2015 21:42

Haha great minds MrsBert!

janesaysl · 05/02/2015 21:47

I think he's right, I'm considering matt handless units myself and trying to stay away from shaker style.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 05/02/2015 21:54

I prefer Matt

Muddlewitch · 05/02/2015 21:59

I've got gloss (didn't chose it but it was put in just before I moved in) it is a lovely kitchen but as pp said difficult to keep looking nice.

Needs polish/glass cleaner all the time and still looks smeary when the light catches it.

AliceInHinterland · 05/02/2015 22:03

Muddle I do recommend those glass e-cloths for the smears. Our kitchen isn't very nice though so I resent spending time buffing it up for it still to look rubbish. A nice one would be worth the effort!

MrsMarigold · 05/02/2015 22:32

he's right a bit of industrial edge is also very now - look on Houzz for inspiration

Lelivre · 05/02/2015 22:35

I've had both, Matte is much easier to keep clean and I hope to have it in our next kitchen. I think you are right gloss is dating already.

janesaysl · 05/02/2015 22:42

Argh Mrs Marigold I'm going to lose hours to houzz now! I'd never heard of it. I think it will be my new Pinterest, so many gorgeous houses Smile

cottageinthecountry · 05/02/2015 22:49

Why don't you go for different base units to wall units? Gloss is good for base units, you could have plain wood for the wall cabinets? You can have what you want really, but it should be you that decides. You can't have half and half designs it has to come from one person.

I wouldn't have gloss with no handles, if you mean the push open doors then you're asking for trouble really.

Artura · 05/02/2015 23:00

Ooh half and half sounds interesting, cottage, and might keep both sides happy. Am I going to waste just as much time on Houzz as I currently do on Pinterest now? How did people choose kitchens in the olden (pre t'internet) days? Maybe life was simpler then, sigh...
My iPad doesn't seem to like matt, only Matt.

Matt handleless, half white, half grey here.

mandy214 · 06/02/2015 16:49

Mat handleless here too.

Artura · 06/02/2015 17:26

How long have you had the handleless matt doors for? Do they get grubby quicker than with handles? They do look fab though...

mandy214 · 06/02/2015 17:57

I've had my kitchen in about 4 months, no it doesn't get grubbier than a cupboard with a handle, but if there is a mark, its amazingly quick and easy to wipe clean.

Marmitelover55 · 06/02/2015 18:03

I also liked Luke Grin

Unidentifieditem · 06/02/2015 18:09

Matte white here. Gloss looks grimy and dated in my opinion. OP you have he better taste in your relationship Wink

Sunnyshores · 06/02/2015 18:13

Agree gloss now looks dated (in 5 years?), and matte now seems to be in - depends how long you're expecting your kitchen to last.

pashmina696 · 06/02/2015 21:45

I have handle-less silk finish, its easier to maintain than high gloss which is a pain as per other posts, but it still has a sheen to it. looks lovely.

echt · 06/02/2015 21:49

I went for matt in my deeply-unfashionable kitchen because I dislike gloss unless it's a window pane, car or pony. In my judgey heart of hearts I think it looks naff, but I never say it in RL.

It look unforgiving of smears.

tellmemore1982 · 06/02/2015 21:54

Another vote for matt finish, I've contrasted new kitchen with a glossy worktop. I think to get a gloss finish that would last well, you'd have to be paying some serious money
