Box room space saving tips

Hi.

My Ds (3) is in a box room. He needs to come out if his cot bed and into a big boy bed.

A single bed will run the length of his left hand wall. We are removing a very shallow fire place on the right do that he can have a wardrobe.

Does anyone have any clever storage or space saving ideas? What is your box room layout? Any beds you can revommend?

Thank you

Can he have a cabin bed of some sort with storage underneath?

We have a single divan bed in ours with sliding doors underneath so lot's of extra storage and no drawers to pull out taking up more space.
We also had fitted furniture installed to make the most of the space, it has a large wardrobe with drawers inside, a small chest of drawers, bedside table and cupboards above the bed.
The furniture goes up to the ceiling to give as much storage as possible.

Mid-sleeper beds are great - the ones with a space underneath and curtains around so you can hide a multitude of stuff behind!

DD1 in box room age 13. Left side: 2'6 bed with pull out plastic boxes under for stuff plus a very narrow tall set of drawers at bed head which keeps her (minimal) clothing tidy, mirror on drawers plus clip on light on bed head for reading. Over bed some very high 50/'60s style kitchen cupboards for storage. Right hand side very very narrow dressing table as desk with a stool that sits under plus tall and narrow and shallow bookshelves (DD reads books by the metre!), large shelf over door for tall books.

Before we moved DS 1 had box room, same bed but a wardrobe with door replaced by curtain so no opening issues, no desk as he was younger but had a low toy box to sit on and keep lego etc in.

Prior to that we haD A VERY HIGH CABIN BED WITH WARDROBE ETC UNDERNEATH; NEVER EVER AGAIN: NIGHTMARE TO TIDY AND MADE THE ROOM FEEL LIKE A CUPBOARD. wE HAVE FOUND THAT IF YOU HAVE EMPTY SPACE AT EYE LEVEL THE ROOM FEELS BIGGER.

whoops sorry ...didn't mean to shout...stupid cold fingers!

Our DS is in a box room too and it has 2 sets of shelves around the walls which are a great help. There's one which runs right round above the height of the door, and another about a foot below it. We have coordinated storage boxes along the lower shelf to store clothes, toys etc, and part of it is for books. The shelf above has some wicker baskets for other bits and pieces that we don't need to use often. We also have lanterns strung along below the lower shelf, so no room is needed for a bedside table lamp.

Hope that makes sense!

We bought a bed from ikea which extends as your child grows, three sizes from toddler to full bed. Once old enough we got a shortie mid sleeper from argos. Like a normal mid sleeper but not as long.

Postchildrenpregranny · 02/02/2015 22:06

Cabin bed (similar to one pictured earlier-agree not a really high one )I think ours was called a mid sleeper ..It has a 3 drawer chest of drawers and a double cupboard underneath And an Ikea tall narrow 5 drawer chest at the bed head .Three shelf wall hung -shelf at the foot end ..Blanket chest under the window .We have a double bookcase on the oppsite wall but used to have a triple wardrobe on it .You could substitute a pull out desk for the chest of drawers depending on age of child The room is about 9ftby 10ft I think .Theres not a lot of floor space though

BingBong36 · 03/02/2015 07:13

Thanks for your help! We were thinking about getting this bed from ikea: as it has 3 storage drawers and isn't as wide as the standard single, what do you think?

Check the drawers before buying, the ones I checked out where tiny. Would have more storage by buying a bed you can fit plastic storage containers underneath.

We kept DS1 in a toddler bed til nearer 5, and then got a cabin bed with a book case, chest of drawers, and a desk underneath. The wardrobe then fits in the room. We also got one with more of a stair case than a ladder - ie the bottom step is about 30cm deep.

Our daughter really wanted a normal bed, she found a picture on the IKEA site which had used the space above the bed for storage. We bought some IKEA large kitchen cabinets and shelving, it looks great and is a really good use of space. You can then put understorage boxes on casters underneath as well.

limesoda · 03/02/2015 11:07

We have that bed (or a version thereof) in our spare room. It only has two drawers underneath but they are MASSIVE.

TeddyBee · 03/02/2015 12:48

That bed feels very big. My daughter has it and you have to keep th floor space clear to use the drawers and it has fallen apart with too vigorous opening and closing. We also have the Ikea Kura and it looks lovely.

There would have been tons of room for stuva drawers and a stuva small wardrobe under there, we just wanted a den for the kids that was all. I can comfortably rest my arms on top of the top rail and I am not tall. DS is four and has no trouble getting in and out.

Not what you asked at all, but if you're taking the chimney breast out make sure the chimney above it is supported!
