Timber Framed Houses

We've been looking at a timber framed house here in Brighton and we're worried about making an offer and just losing our entire survey cost on it. Has anyone got any experience of buying timber framed houses?

I think it's probably built in the 60s or earlier, it has a loft conversion, and an outer skin of brick, but I really don't know what tends to make mortgage lenders or buyers run scared on timber framed buildings at all!

Ours is timber framed & has no problems. Got valued at full buying price & had no issues with mortgage either. Not sure if/what is the problem?!

Ours is timber framed with a outer skin of brick.

Didn't find out till the survey. Was a bit worried first but then did some research and it seems a common construction method now.

Had no issues with values, mortgage or insurance.

I'd just make sure you check with your mortgage lender that they lend on timber framed houses. Shouldn't be a problem though. Good luck.

Reassuring stuff, thanks guys!

The property has been on the market for a while, and we've had a second viewing, but another couple has also made an offer, so we're all "ack!"

I did a bit of googling about timber framed properties and found lots of people saying that they are hard to sell and mortgage, and really wanted to see if anyone else has found that to be the case.

We sold ours with no problems.

Our house was bought after intense bidding which made the price go up a good 5%! Surely not been hard to sell for our vendor!!!

Ditto what quinandthem said.

Thanks all! We've gone ahead and put in a serious offer, fingers crossed!

they are the norm in other countries

Yeah, I grew up in Canada where ALL the houses are timber framed, but they are built differently there. And lenders in the UK do seem to be a bit touchy about them.

My entire house is wooden, and it's still mortgaged with a mainstream lender. Shouldn't be a problem.
