Do you need a bath?

Following on from lexie01's thread, we're trying to work out whether to get rid of the bath altogether and just have a shower, or whether to have both a bath and a shower. How essential is a bath in a property, considering future value and that we are on a water meter?
It's the main bathroom (master bedroom has a small en suite) and we need to consider accessibility so a shower over the bath isn't an option.
(Back story: we bought this bungalow last year and it has, in the past, suffered a horrible leak in the main bathroom, under the sink and when they fixed(?) it they didn't replace the damp cupboards so they stink and a re-do is absolutely urgent)

If you would ever hope to sell to a family with young kids, then a bath is necessary, otherwise it is personal choice.

I'd always put a bath back in if it had been taken out but then I love long soaks (not, being the mother of young children, that I often get them anymore).

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath.

BackforGood · 30/01/2015 14:57

If I were looking to buy, it would put me right off if there were no bath in the property - price would have to reflect both the cost and hassle of putting on in. That said, there's a lot of people never use a bath, and a lot of the property programmes show homes without baths all the time, which people buy.
If you aren't planning on moving in the next 10 years or so though, do whatever suits you and your family.

If this is your home and not an investment property do what suits you. But I would be put off not having a bath in any property for sale (DH likes them, I haven't had one for about 7 years!). We are going to have tiny bedroom made into wet room for very ill dd as we would esther lose a bedroom than tbe bath

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 30/01/2015 15:01

If you're going to be there for a long time, then absolutely do whatever suits you and your family. However, if I was looking at a house, no bath would be a no no for me. I love my bath!

TywysogesGymraeg · 30/01/2015 15:02

We don't have a bath. We have two bathrooms (one ensuite). We had a bath in the "family" bathroom that our DDs use, but it was a very small bathroom, and no-one could remember the last time anyone used the bath - we're talking 5+ years - so we had it taken out. The girls (teens) love it, as there's far more room in the bathroom now. No-one has missed it and it's been over a year.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/01/2015 15:09

I think do what suits you and then if you come to sell you can put a cheap bath in with an over bath shower.

When I bought this house there was no shower which horrified me more than no bath would. Still bought it and had a plumber starting work the week we moved in to sort it ASAP!

seaoflove · 30/01/2015 15:12

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath either.

fussychica · 30/01/2015 15:28

We have a bungalow with only one bathroom with no real possibility of getting another in due to plumbing /drain positions. When we revamped the bathroom we ripped out the bath and went for a large full wall shower which we love. Obviously, our property isn't really family orientated. We did what we wanted but have noticed that all the neighbours who have revamped have done something similar which actually surprised me as I know lots of people still love a bath, as evidenced by the comments so far.

Redglitter · 30/01/2015 15:32

I'd love to get rid of my bath. A house with no bath but a nice big shower would be an absolute plus for me. My mums in the process of getting rid of hers and having a lovely big walk in shower

I hate baths

PossumPoo · 30/01/2015 15:43

We bought our house without a bath and one of the things l said when viewing was l will be putting one in (was 7 months pregnant )

DD was tiny and in a baby bath until she was around 3. Then l discovered how much easy showering her was!

But we did put a bath in last year and l wouldn't be without it now.

So my points are (!) people WILL buy a house without a bath, they don't suit everyone and you can do without one and see the positives for it.

Do what suits your family.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/01/2015 16:12

How about a three quarter bath and a shower?

Rootvegetables · 30/01/2015 16:13

I think you need a bath, we just sold a house without one and it was a real sticking point for some as it doesn't seem like a proper bathroom. One of the main things on our list for our new house was a bath even though I've only used it myself twice in 6 months it's lovely to have it and ds can happily spend an hour in there with all his toys!

Gozogozo · 30/01/2015 16:27

Family house & we have just removed both baths, but we plan to be here for at least the next 15-20 years. When/if we want to sell, we will decide what to do then. I personally haven't used the bath in the last 13 years & DH never has. Annoyingly, the DC have just learned the pleasures of soaking!

Bowlersarm · 30/01/2015 16:31

I would only buy a house without a bath if there was space in the bathroom to put one in. Probably knock a bit of the asking price to do it and for inconvenience.

You are really limiting the number of people it would appeal to without a bath.

SolomanDaisy · 30/01/2015 16:44

I've bought places without a bath twice, but both times put in a bath afterwards. So it doesn't put us off buying, but the price needs to reflect the need for new bathroom.

Apatite1 · 30/01/2015 16:57

I'm not a huge fan of baths, but am putting in a freestanding bath in the ensuite (because it looks amazing) and an inbuilt one in the other bathroom, which will be perfect for bathing kids. Separate large showers in both.

We plan to stay in this home for a long time, even so, I'm keeping our house desirable to young families. You never know what the future will bring!
