Bathrooms...how much needs to be tiled?

It's been years and years since I've had to plan a new bathroom and wondered if it was still the norm to tile up to the ceiling around the bath / shower but up to waist height everywhere else? I have a smallish bathroom so will have a bath with shower over it. If you were planning a new bathroom how much of it would you tile?

depends on what look you are trying to achieve. I favour the country look so only have tiles where the shower is and have tongue and groove panelling around the rest of the bathroom up to dado level. Large tiles seem to be in vogue at the moment. go and look at some recent magazines to see what people are putting in these days and visit some bathroom showrooms before making up your mind.

did ours last year. It was completely tiled with ghastly flowers scattered about. Now tiled above sink and halfway up wall above bath, rest is painted, much better. Shower is separate and completely tiled; if it was over the bath then obviously would need full height.

shower panels are a good alternative.

Have looked at hundreds of bathroom pictures now and a lot seem to have painted walls with tiles just around the bath / shower and over the sink. I think this is the way we'll go...Fired Earth seem to have some gorgeous tile / paint combinations.

That's what we have Love. I personally don't like an all tiled bathroom.

BauerTime · 31/01/2015 17:35

I don't like an all tiles bathro, it makes me feel like the walls are coming in on me. We have 3 fully tiled walls and one painted.

Lagoonablue · 31/01/2015 17:51

Get washable paint though. Any water splash will ruin your flat, emulsioned walls.

PigletJohn · 31/01/2015 21:24

What about behind the WC?

obsessedwithinteriors · 31/01/2015 21:27

Great thread. Our plan is tiles all around bath right to the top as we have a shower screen. Tiles all around sink, toilet, almost up to dedo rail, but we don't have one. Then paint behind radiator and leave one wall free to paint.

Thinking of painting it dove grey, white suite and maybe white tiles, but maybe too much white then?

Not sure about floor yet.

I redecorated my bathroom last year and I have no tiles whatsoever as I hate them. I have very good vinyl floors and stormwall in the shower. Wonderful easy to clean smooth surfaces and no nasty grout! Just a thought...

LoveDexter · 07/02/2015 07:52

PigletJohn...do you think tiles behind the toilet are a must have? In the downstairs toilet it's painted and it's not a problem at all.

Obsessed...I want a grey bathroom too but was thinking grey tiles then dark grey bathroom tall unit and matching sink unit, have never liked sink pedestals. Not sure about paint colour...I read that for small bathrooms it was good to match paint colour to the tiles. I love grey and white together and it's really flexible as to the colour of towels, accessories you can choose.

don't know

I am thinking if you half-tile the wall with the basin, it might look less fussy to half-tile the whole wall, and fully tile around the bath. I don't like the look of little patches of tile.

ChocolateCherry · 07/02/2015 09:50

We've just done ours and half tiled it (but fully tiled in shower). It means we can change the look of it easily by changing the paint on the top half. Also fully tiled seems to make the room seem smaller imho.

ChocolateCherry · 07/02/2015 09:51

Meant to say, floor tiles match.

fussychica · 07/02/2015 10:53

Going against the grain here - we have fully tiled three walls in beautiful white tiles plus one in matching black with a feature strip in the huge shower. Sounds awful, looks great and super easy to clean.

mousmous · 07/02/2015 10:58

we have fully tiled all the way around.
it's a small room an the condensation from the shower goes nearly everywhere.
looks fab, not like a hospital at all.

It's been years since I planned a bathroom too but when I did our two we did tile floor to ceiling with large matte white tiles and it was airy and great to keep clean.

Porcelanosa have everything 40% off (ends today) and lots of different tiled bathroom displays (in ours anyway) if you want some ideas. I was there yesterday and rather liked the matte white heavily textured ones.

JingleBellsJuliet · 07/02/2015 22:52

I'm currently having the same thoughts as my bathroom is being changed next week and I've not sorted out tiles yet as I can't decide what to do. It's currently tiled on the wall behind the toilet and sink, with a built up shelf type tiled area. All this needs to be ripped out to put the new suite in, and I've not decided what I'm doing with it yet. I'm thinking ceiling height tiles around the bath/shower, then getting the rest of the room skimmed and painting with washable paint, apart from a small splash back behind the sink.

PigletJohn · 07/02/2015 23:15

I think window "sills" need to be tiled, because people are liable to put bottles and things on them, spill shampoo etc. Preferably sloping slightly into the room so water won't run into the windowframe or the wall.

Are there any new builds near you with open show homes? If so- you could pop in and look at what they're doing and see if you like it. We're buying a new build at the moment and the 3 show homes there are all done in v different styles to help choose what fittings/decor you want. We are choosing fully tiled in 3 of the bathrooms just for sake of being able to clean the walls if necessary and not having to worry about decorating the rooms in the future- of course we are picking neutral tiles rather than fussy ones which will date. But it is really useful looking around the show homes and seeing the different styles :-)
