We had a 1920 house before this and added an extension which gave us a separate living room and a kitchen living dinning. Some things I loved about it but some I hated. Moved to 1974 bungalow and am really liking being shut away in a small but perfectly formed kitchen. No hubby or kids coming in to turn radio 4 off an make me listen awful tv. What do you think is it still they way forward or old hat. Dh a builder so I am lucky to have a choice.

1970's houses usually lend themselves quite well to renovations and extensions.

Any chance you can knock a wall down between the kitchen and another room?

I do like being able to shut myself (and the mess away) as well.

Given you've got a builder at hand, would the layout lend itself to putting a large sliding door in between the kitchen and dining room (something really solid, maybe floor to ceiling and goes into a wall pocket so that when shut it doesn't scream door). That way you could ahve it open when you wanted but shut away most of the time. I'm thinking about something like a 60s house I saw on the TV which had chunky wood room divider which actually hid a sliding door in matching wood so when the door was shut it looked all of a whole.

We are in a 1940s bungalow and are about to extend out the back so we will have a longer lounge (7m x 3.5m) and a big kitchen/diner with a sofa area at 8m x 4.5m. I really like the table in kitchen and the social aspect of having a sofa area but I need that seperate lounge too.

Hello again kittentwo, I was going to post a similar question today.

We have come from a house where almost all the living space including halls and kitchen was open to somewhere with two reception rooms (double doors between) and a separate kitchen. I am enjoying the separate rooms. I'm especially liking shutting off the noise mess and smells of the kitchen.

However everyone assumes we will knock through to the dining room. We do need to make a decision about that as we are about to put a kitchen in. I'm not sure if we should or not. Maybe we just like the novelty of separate rooms. Or maybe a long narrow hatch (with some kind of door) would be the answer.

Anyway thanks for posting your interesting question.

Thank you all. Lelivre interestingly just had estate agent around for some advice he says open plan. Architect says separate. I think we are going to do both keep part of kitchen hidden with a part open and make largest area dining with room for a sofa in smaller area maybe two armchairs by wood burner in dining area but most importantly no tv just radio/music. Let me know what you decide Lelivre.

Excellent idea re sliding door. We are just about to embark on a big open plan extension but I'm really torn. I want to have the openness during the day but at night I want to be able to close the kitchen off.
I need to talk to DH about this!
