Have just moved into 1974 bungalow one previous owner pristine like living in a piece of history my childhood all over again like a guilty pleasure I know I should hate my turquoise loo but I just love it along with my still working waste disposal. Never thought I'd love a home like this has made me rethink how to renovate it want to be tasteful but respectful in its day this house must of been the bees knees. Any tips on how to keep the best bits an incorporate into new. Loving my gplan bedroom suite too.

Oooh I like that first sink.

I've got modern panelled doors (unfortunately, I prefer flush) but I think we must have the original handles. These are everywhere and I kind of like the oil-slick metallic finish.

I'm following this with interest. We're about to move into a 1973 A frame house. Sadly it had a makeover in the 1990s, so lots to do to put it back.

Lelivre · 19/02/2015 12:08

Anyone else in a 50s-70s home and making improvements?

Ours clearly had a lot of work done in the 90s and nothing since.

We have lots to do and it will take us time as we have the funds and opportunity, I'd like to modernise in a way that is mindful of the period.

I would love sharing ideas/finds. Anyone like to join me? And should I start a new thread?

meadowquark · 19/02/2015 12:58

I am also following with interest. I will be moving into 1969 town house. It is a "period" if you come to think about it!

SwedishEdith · 19/02/2015 13:05

You'll need to get a radiogram. Something like this www.computinghistory.org.uk/userdata/images/large/PRODPIC-14303.jpg

I've got a late 60s house, sadly all original features got replaced with hideous upvc etc in the 90s. We've decided to modernise (I do have a serving hatch and similar banisters to Arya, but the staircase needs reversing and widening as we are increasing the size and layout so both will have to go).

I'd love to nod towards its 60s roots, but I think we will do so with some midcentury furniture etc rather than architecturally. I'd join a thread!

Devora, the taps are called "SupaTaps" they were made between the mid fifties and late seventies. You can find them on ebay sometimes!

Lunaballoon · 19/02/2015 13:31

I would so love this too. My dream is for our next house move to be into a 60s/70s property with all decor and furnishings in keeping with the period. Very Mad Men. Love it!

CurrerBell · 19/02/2015 13:35

We're renovating a 1966 house - also owned by one family since new. Sadly it was completely beige when we bought it - but we did find the original parquet floor under the carpet!

We also had four layers of wallpaper (you could literally peel back the decades) and four layers of lino in the kitchen! They never removed anything, just covered it over. (Including the live wires.....)

We are modernising in a sort of Scandinavian style (white walls, grey aluminium windows) and have lots of G-plan furniture and retro stuff in bright colours.

bilbodog · 19/02/2015 13:58

you lot can't have been growing up in the 60s and 70s like I was - can't stand the decor and taste (or lack of) from that era! Everything was so brown and orange and horrible................................. each to their own!

Apatite1 · 19/02/2015 14:17

I'm not keen on brown and orange either, but I like the furniture which have become design classics. I'm not enamoured with the 70s middle class suburban look.

Gatekeeper · 19/02/2015 14:22

God I love those Supataps; we had them in our 1968 new build concrete flat roof house complete with bannisters just like those pictured and warm air duct heating. Coming from a pre war freezing end of terrace with coal fire my parents thought they were in heaven

Lunaballoon · 19/02/2015 14:26

I did grow up in the 60's/70's and remember hating the brown and orange psychedelic wallpaper and lime green three piece suite. But when I see similar looks now (albeit a bit more tasteful) I feel full of nostalgia. There was a lot of really good design back then that is bang on trend right now.

Lelivre · 20/02/2015 08:02

Oooh company!

I've got little kids and little headspace to think sometimes. If love to sound out ideas (and pinch some!) perhaps I will creat a new thread and link this one.

I want to update with a nod to the mid century. Hopefully then it will 'fit' the house and not date quite so quickly, and I like the PP idea on an airy scandi feel as I think that would work well here.

Sprucegoose · 20/02/2015 12:26

We moved into a 1969 townhouse last year and are trying to strike a balance between modern and mid century. Love the understated Scandi look, but have to say I'm also a fan of bright 1960s colours .... especially orange... The previous owners had modernised but retained quite a few features - parquet floor in the sitting room, original banisters, those little windows above the doors.

We're about halfway through renovating at the moment so it's great to hear what other people are doing. We've just bought a radiogram from eBay, SwedishEdith. Looks cool and am loving listening to all my old teenage vinyl Smile. Have also just ordered a knock-off version of one of these for the hall www.dezignlover.com/en/clothes-rack/85-eames-clothes-rack-hang-it-all.html
