Wool duvets......

.....does anyone have one and are they any good?

We are looking to replace our duvet and we're going to go with a goose down type then I saw wool ones and wondered if they are as good/better? Don't know anyone that has one so thought I'd check out you wonderful MNetters.....

Was intending getting a 13.5 tog down duvet, but the wool ones I've seen are 10.5. I read somewhere that wool keeps you warmer in winter and cooler in summer so maybe we could get away with the lower tog rating.

Any experience at all?

Thanks in advance x

Prefer goose down as it wraps over you and is really light. We have a JL combi Hungarian goose down duvet and have never needed more than the 9 tog spring/autumn part in really cold weather - we live in a modern well insulated large house. It is breathable so you shouldn't get too hot in summer if you also have a summer weight duvet. 13.5 would be unbearable in summer (or at anytime for me)
Either preferable to polyester as both wool and down are breathable.

We have a wool duvet. It's winter weight and very warm and cosy.

We swapped from a goose down 13.5 toga to a autumn/winter weight wool duvet and I much prefer it now - never thought I would but it regulates my temperature much better and my DH has stopped sweating as much!

Look at Baavet - they have a 'sale' page of seconds so we got ours at much reduced prices and they are pretty much perfect.

And they don't have a synthetic 'liner' sandwiched inside the wool which a lot of the big brand and cheaper ones do if you look carefully - which stop the duvet being breathable. Have been very happy with all the duvets and the mattress topper I bought from them - had them a couple of years now.

We love ours; its by Devon duvets and John Lewis stock them. Nice and cosy but not too heavy. The one thing I would change is to get a king size for our super king bed - more choice for bedding and less overhang which I don't like. Great temperature regulator, and get the pillows too - they're worth it! :)

Thanks so much for all your thoughts ladies......will definitely check out those suggestions x

I simply love ours and it makes our bed look really tidy too as sits differently to our feather ones. I prefer the feel of it and has more substance somehow, and works for dh's asthma

Juno213 · 25/01/2015 20:35

We have one. I love it. It really does regulate your temperature and had stopped dh sweating all night. And it's completely machine washable.

Quitelikely · 25/01/2015 20:43

Go to baavet. Just google. I have one and it's the best one I've ever had.

The feather ones IMO are heavy and hot, the feathers don't always spread equally and can poke through.

These were my choice before I discovered baavet! And that was thanks to MN

we've had wool for years and I wouldn't touch another one now. They are warm, cool, light and just fabulous. John Lewis and M & S do them and also some UK manufacturers you can find on the www.

gobbin · 26/01/2015 22:19

We have wool duvets from Baavet for us and DS. Outstanding. A medium weight kingsize on a double bed takes us through 3/4 of the year for warmth (change to sheet+blanket in summer). I like the feel of the weight of them (not overly heavy, but you know they're there).

We also have 60%down/40%feather IKEA duvets and they are also outstanding. A 4.5tog plus blanket across feet is a perfect combo for me and DH and on its own is enough for DS in winter. V light, v warm.

And neither the Baavet or IKEA make you sweat. They both breathe perfectly.

We absolutely love our all seasons wool one from soak& sleep. Gorgeous weight, toasty warm but not sweaty. Totally recommend.

We have a soak and sleep one and love it. Only slight issue is that although it is warm it is much thinner / less bulky than the regular type and we found one or two duvet covers were a bit too big for it.

Toomuchtea · 25/10/2021 19:57

We have Baavet and I absolutely love it. So much better than the goosedown one we had before which I just used to overheat in. I always look forward to getting back home if we've been away so I can get back to my beloved woolly duvet.

Justcannotbearsed · 25/10/2021 20:14

I’ve got a soak and sleep one. Amazing for night sweats/menopause….

silentpool · 25/10/2021 20:28

I have a summer weight one from Wool Room and a wool underlay. In winter I add a blanket on top, as I prefer layers. It's so nice.

Subbaxeo · 25/10/2021 21:37

I have a Baavet and would never go back to down-apart from our very light summer one. I find down clammy-spent a fortune on a Simba one which is supposed to regulate temperature and was really uncomfortable. Wool feels really nice-cosy but not sweaty and when you make the bed, it looks a lot smarter-not all puffy like a normal duvet. We got ours from the bargain corner at Baavet but has been perfect for us. British made from Wales too.

IsThePopeCatholic · 25/10/2021 22:10

Some feather and down duvets are produced in conditions which are cruel to the geese, eg. regularly plucking down feathers from geese when they are still alive and causing considerable pain. If you do buy feather and down duvets, please do your research beforehand . The ones from Hungary and Poland are particularly bad.

Wombat49 · 25/10/2021 22:16

I bought a Baavet after reading about them here. Bloody lovely.

Got the aged dog a bed too. She loves it.

Super-responsive customer service too. I was faffing about which weight to buy they gave good advice. Also dog bed size was perfect.
