Water leak between house and external stop cock. Terrified

Looking for reassurances

Found out on Friday after receiving £900 water bill that there is a leak somewhere between my internal stopcock and the external one at the metre.

The external one is at the top of my drive.

I have no idea where the leak is or where all the water is going.

Welsh water are coming out on Tuesday to try to locate the leak. The house is mortgaged but I have just taken a 40% pay cut to move to a local job to make life less complicated and reduce my travel. I wouldn't technically get my existing mortgage on my current salary so if I need thousands of pounds to sort this out I have no idea how I will do this. Does anyone have any experience of this sort of thing and what happens?

I'm terrified. I am a single mum and work full time. I have no spare cash.

That's not necessarily true - water inlet pipes & stopcocks are all over the place. My dads comes in at the back of his garage/boiler room (60s house, Wales) our original one came in at the downstairs loo, our old houses had them in the utility room & in the kitchen and my mums (also Wales) comes in by the front door.

My insurance covered replacement of the supply pipe when ours leaked with £250 excess. Our water company offers £250 towards repairs by looping it off your bills. They also will refund the cost of loat water. So it cost is nothing.

Dug out your insurance policy and talk to your insurers before you panic.

Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks all. Kitchen not in line with drive. Stopcock is actually in bathroom.

Anyway WW came out today and confirmed leak. Don't know where tho but can hear water loudest near meter so points to that end rather than house.

They used... A metal rod to their ear to listen for it. Oh yes. Technology Blush

Anyway they now go to external supplier to come back at some point - unknown - to dig out external stopcock and replace. If that doesn't fix they will send someone else out to find and repair the leak. They won't replace mains as my water supply pipe is more than 15m long.

At this point it seems they will be reducing my bill but not sure by how much.

And if they do the repair I will have to pay to put back together again whatever they dig up. My excess for water egress is 600 quid so almost certainly not worth claiming on insurance unless they trash my whole drive.

I still don't know where this water is going tho. And WW aren't in any particular rush to find out. Weird.
