Which 2 of these 3 things would you choose?

We are moving to a new house which we want to make into the house we stay in for the long term, probably until our children move out. We only have one at the moment but will hopefully have one more DC.

At the moment the original galley kitchen opens out into a kitchen diner extension which we are incorporating into the original dining room to make a kitchen/diner/family room and the galley will be put to other uses. It already houses the boiler and washing machine.

In an ideal world I'd turn it into a downstairs toilet, laundry room and walk in pantry. Trouble is we only have room for 2 of these. I'd LOVE to a walk in pantry and it is the stuff of my dreams, but my head is telling me that a downstairs lav and a laundry room are the 2 most practical and 'necessary'. Downstairs loo as otherwise we'd only have one toilet in the whole house, and laundry room as otherwise the washing machine would be in the family room and the noise would likely drive me mad and I also like the idea of being able to hang washing and store piles of clean stuff somewhere out of sight.

Which two would you choose?

Loo and laundry

I am lucky enough to have a pantry but I could easily live without it.

TheyLearnedFromBrian · 18/01/2015 17:46

Loo and laundry, and clever shelving in the laundry which can house a lot of the staples/tins whatever, then a big lovely wooden pantry cupboard in the kitchen for the rest.

MelanieCheeks · 18/01/2015 17:47

What is it about a walk in pantry that you find attractive?

Eastwickwitch · 18/01/2015 18:05

Loo & Laundry room.
I have a walk in larder that I love but it's a luxury not an essential.

stonecircle · 18/01/2015 18:13

Loo and laundry.. I grew up in a house with a walk in pantry. It had a marble shelf to put perishable things on to try and keep them cool. We didn't have a fridge then you see. I've no idea what I would put in a pantry if I had one (well actually I have, I'd use it as a boot room which is what I could really do with). If you have cupboards and a big fridge freezer, why would you need a pantry?

GlitterKandinsky · 18/01/2015 18:18

Toilet and laundry definitely.

What would you keep in the pantry? Wouldn't food be kept in the kitchen in easy reach? Otherwise you'd be to-ing and fro-ing to the pantry every time your DS changes their mind about what cereal they want/want another piece of toast. That would drive me mad.

charlie0123 · 18/01/2015 18:23

I echo what others have said about combining your utility with a pantry. Mine has washer, dryer, fridge and freezer with shelving for tins, pasta, rice, drinks, pet food, cleaning products and all my bogof buys. Microwave and slow cooker in there too - it's a fab space!

bumpertobumper · 18/01/2015 18:24

lav and laundry.
as you are doing the kitchen you can incorporate some brilliant, efficient storage.
I don't know what they're called but you call get outdoor wall mounted cupboards, well ventilated and ideal for storing eg veg and leftovers.
or just get a massive fridgeGrin

BauerTime · 18/01/2015 19:10

You know what, I'm glad I posted this as I'm going right off the idea of a pantry now. If I think about it, I can't actually think of a single reason that I want one other than I like the idea of a big organised space where everything can be laid out as opposed to packed into cupboards. It would be a total waste of space and like someone said, modern kitchen design has some really good ways of incorporating smart storage.

I really want a laundry as clothes hanging around in the winter drive me mad. The room will have a radiator and good ventilation so will be for drying also.

I have one of those ceiling racks in my utility room. The clothes dry quite quickly, because they are up high. You do need to make sure there is something to attach it to, so make sure whoever is doing the building work knows it's going in, so you can have joists in a suitable place for it.

I've opted for boot room, loo and utility room with lots of storage in our house plans. Plenty of room of dry goods and staples in utility, big sink there as well.

msmorgan · 18/01/2015 19:59

We've put in a downstairs loo and a utility, with a larder cupboard in the utility for extra kitchen storage.

We had a walk in larder in our last house and only used about 2 of the shelves for food, the rest was stuff that just got dumped in there.

BackforGood · 18/01/2015 20:05

Definitely Downstairs toilet and Laundry, without question.

You will thank us as your dc start toilet training Wink

BauerTime · 18/01/2015 20:53

back ha ha yes DS is 17m and I hope to have downstairs loo in situ before toilet training commences!

Have you room to build a separate laundry block outside? Our kitchen/breakfast room in the cottage we're doing up is tiny so I'm having a separate building (3m x 1.5m so no planning permission needed) on the other side of the terrace to house a sink, washer/dryer and freezer.

Flomple · 19/01/2015 00:01

Loo and utility room, sorry.

Could you put the mother of all pantry cupboards in the utility? We have a big food cupboard in ours, it works well. I'd love one of those big pullout larder cupboards but it didn't work in our space.

oldnewmummy · 19/01/2015 04:53

We have a corner built-in pantry in the kitchen. It is nice (and 8 year old loves it for hide and seek) but there is a tendency to overstock it. (Also have laundry room and downstairs loos, and wouldn't rate it over those.)

ChristmasName · 19/01/2015 07:29

I love pantries, but toilet and utility seems much more practical. Is there any option for another toilet upstairs?

BauerTime · 19/01/2015 07:50

Thanks all, you've convinced me!

No, no room for another toilet upstairs.

Lav and laundry room. Could you out lav in laundry room?

TheHappinessTrap · 19/01/2015 07:59

Good choice OP!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 19/01/2015 08:08

Loo and laundry.

Pantry is nice but not essential, the other two are essentials in my world.

merlehaggard · 19/01/2015 08:12

Toilet and laundry room.

wobblebobblehat · 19/01/2015 08:38

Toilet and laundry room.

Might not be forever. You might move a few years down the line.
