Bugger, we've paid for Homebase kitchen fitters but now i've got cold feet. Can I cancel their fitters?

We bought a kitchen just before Christmas and it is due to be delivered next month. They had great offers on so I am happy with the actual price of the kitchen.

However we recently used an independant plumber and got burned because, whilst his plumbing was ok, other things he said he could do were badly done and DH has spent a lot of time putting it right. Plus he got on my nerves coming to me with problems he had found then stood looking at me blankly until he eventually came up with a solution, plus there were a few other things and as it took longer than he anticipated, it appeared he just got fed up with the job.

As a result we decided to pay extra and have Homebase do the lot so I don't have the hassle. The fitting is £3435 and we have just been quoted £665 from their plasterer to add on top of the fitting.

I am getting very uncomfortable with the amount it's costing. The kitchen itself isn't this much and I know I am paying over the odds.

We have paid the bulk and taken out finance to pay the remainder in a year. Would I actually be able to cancel their fitters and use someone else at this stage? I reckon I would save about 1k. When the plumber quoted for the bathroom we originally said we would want the kitchen done by him too and he said he would quote nearer the time but he did say we were probably looking at 2k. Needless to say we aren't using him anyway.

That's very expensive. I have just paid £1400 to an independent fitter who is excellent, kitchen is about 5x4m, U-shape with additional larder space. He is excellent and I am delighted with his work, it's worth shopping around. He's also doing bathrooms and I know he's about 60% cheaper than if I had gone through the store.

Best thing to do would be have a quote done independently and ask homebase to match it, a lot of places will do that.

You'd have to read your agreement about whether you can cancel

I'll have a look at it.

That's a great price! You aren't in the SW are you?

I've looked at the paperwork. There is abs nothing in there about cancelling at all. Very annoying. Now i'm going to have to phone them.

No, SE. It is part of a bigger project for him so that might be why. Good luck, I would get another written quote before you cancel otherwise you might find it difficult to instruct someone.
