tiles or upstands or both

Hi,

After almost a week of missing out on potentially fun dreams I need to make these kitchen decisions and get it coming, so hoping you may have some advice to help me. The kitchen is a fat u shape with some extra corners so the arabesque tiles i like will be horrible to fit. We could have upstands on the left and right walls to deal with all the corners and just tile the wall in the centre where the hob is... has anyone else done a similar thing? do you think a combination of tiles and upstands could work or would look dodgy? the worktop/upstands are marble white quartz, kitchen is pale grey shaker style. thank you

I'm at the exact same
Stage as you in my kitchen process and had the same dilemma. After looking at about a hundred house magazines I have come to the conclusion that upstands with tiles looks too busy. Either have just upstands or tile to the worktop good luck.

I like the tiles but if they're a pain to fit then if just go for up stands. Presumably extra corners will ruin the look of them. You can't have a 'statement' panel of tiles. I'd get a splash back behind the hob that complements the up stands.

What scheme are you going for?

Seen you said white quartz and grey units . You can get a quartz panel behind the hob. Probably easier then tiles to wipe down as well. I have quartz up stands and splash back.

Thank you mummynanny67, haven't seen a single example of a kitchen using both but if it's not a good look at least i can move on now.
Quartz upstands and splash back it is then ZenNudist. Will probably need to retile the bathroom soon anyway. Thank you :)

We had arabesque tiles (from Fired Earth) in our last kitchen and had the same dilemma......in the end, despite ordering upstands we opted to not use them and just went with the tiled backsplash......

Similar dilemma, similar colour scheme.
I was going to have grey glass over the white/grey marble upstands or possibly grey tiles but I'm worried it will look too busy - aaargh more bloody decisions. Perhaps I won't use the upstands I have.

AllBoxedUp · 14/01/2015 10:11

Oh. I was going to have a small upstand with tiles. ... is this a bad thing to do?

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 14/01/2015 10:14

We have up stands with paint and glass splash backs behind the sink and hob. It looks good but if we'd had the money I think I would have opted for the splash backs or tiles all the way around. They just don't protect enough of the wall and it already needs repainting.

PinkOboe · 14/01/2015 16:03

I've had the same dilemma recently. i think i'm going to do upstands all the way around and just tile the wall with the cooker on it. thought about doing just a panel of tiles behind the cooker, but think it will look better extended out each side. but then i will have an upstand AND tiles on that wall Confused

it's so hard to visualise

i love those tiles, did you find them in the uk? i intially wanted ogee shaped ones, but the only ones i could find were in the USA and were going to cost
