Hearth alternatives - anyone got glass or just tiles?

We need to put flooring down in our living room, and there's a chimney opening where a gas fire used to be. There is a cement rectangle on the floor where obviously a hearth could be sited, but I'm wondering what other options there are to a big slab of granite/marble.

We're going to put a woodburner in, what can go underneath? Glass on top of engineered wood? Floor tiles?

The concrete needs to meet regulations and then you need a suitable decorative hearth on top - this might be useful to you.

It depends where you put the stove and what sort it is too.

Thanks for that. I really like the look of just continuing the wood flooring into the recess and then putting the burner on a stove plate, rather than building an actual step hearth. Our situation looks like that photo, there is a rectangle of concrete that protrudes into the room.

We wanted to do glass but it was too expensive. We've got slate tiles on to a wooden floor, with a wood burner on top.

Installed years and years ago....may not be compliant with latest regs!

Our chimney sweep advised us last year to make the tiled area bigger and remove the little skirting boards that were nearby for safety.

We have a glass hearth over a wooden floor. It cost about £180.

Yes, the stove plates seem to be much much cheaper than getting a hearth built, and less intrusive into the room too.
