It will be cold and a maintenance nightmare won't it? And the parking is weird. And there's no downstairs loo...

We live in an old house now and I am sick of fixing the leaky roof and ancient plumbing. We found a 70s house which is perfect for us, but the house that the vendors were buying has fallen through and there is nothing else coming to market. The above house has a complete chain and they just need a buyer. I actually like the look of the house and really like the garden and location, so now I'm considering giving up my Saturday to drive there from S London and go and see it. Should I just stick with the house where we've had our offer accepted? Is it madness to make a decision based on the readiness of the chain? I hate property chains, I'm losing my nerve already!!

That's quite a crappy and frankly rude thing to say Bumwad Sad

It inspired me to go away and find this link again as I have this argument on a fairly regular basis with DH who can't see beyond a georgian/victorian aesthetic. Certainly the vast majority of Victorian terraces were the mass produced homes of their day and a huge proportion of them are shoddily built requiring enormous effort to keep them standing when any sort of alteration is required. I dream of buying a 70's home and remodelling it into something more contemporary. I think they are often a fantastic opportunity.

OP - I came across this recently and thought it was a fabulous example of what can be achieved with a "bog standard" 70's house.

I like it. It looks like you could extend too. I am sitting in my study just now, which is 11ft x 7ft. It is a perfectly ok size for a child's bedroom.

I love the those contemporary external facelifts...this website has loads:

You just need a bucket loads of vision and creativity - something those cautious people who insist on period often dont have.

And yes do stay south to continue to rack up you property equity then you can retire early and downsize and buy the 5 houses in linconshire/mildlands etc as an income whilst you live the high life in the Sth of France !! ;) an option not open to those living in cheap as chips houses with no prospect of equity growth...;)
