Does anyone know Horsforth in Leeds

Hello. We're planning a move back to Yorkshire from Hertfordshire to be closer to family.

We're looking at North Yorkshire but I also like the idea of being in Leeds, particularly Horsforth. I've only been there once, years ago, and remember it as being lovely but that's about it.

I'd love some inside information on it.
Does it have a good community feel? Does it feel buzzy with lots to do with toddlers? Which nurseries and schools would you recommend? Also how is the commute into Leeds City centre? And does it feel like a suburb of Leeds or does it have its own identity as a place?

We'll have a budget of around £250k and would like a three bedroom with a decent garden near a good school. It seems doable from what I've seen on rightmove. Any areas to avoid though?

Thanks so much in advance!

Horsforth is a perfect place for families, I can't think of many boxes it doesn't tick. Rawdon and Yeadon are also nice. Don't know about the other places mentioned so can't comment.

I wouldn't worry too much about the flight path. You get used to it, and they only fly during the day.

Bunbaker · 29/11/2014 21:59

anyportinastorm I used to live in Guiseley. I have happy memories of many evenings spent in the Regent, and eating some fantastic curries at the Prachee.

OP have you considered Otley?

Reading this thread is making me feel quite homesick for Leeds

Bunbaker · 29/11/2014 22:00

We went to a barbecue at a house just off Scotland Lane years ago. You could see the writing on the fuselage of the planes that flew over, and it was very noisy.

Purplecircle · 29/11/2014 22:45

I lived with the flight path of any airport for years. We couldn't have a conversation in the garden or open bedroom windows in summer

I wouldn't do it again

AnythingNotEverything · 29/11/2014 23:06

We honestly don't find it a problem. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I certainly wouldn't write a whole area off because of the planes. That said, I don't live on Scotland Lane so maybe it is bad up there!

ginzillas · 29/11/2014 23:10

We live pretty close to Luton airport right now and gets lots of planes flying over. Dd is obsessed with planes so it's sort of a bonus. But I would not want to live a close as you've described, purple and bun.

I'm so homesick for Yorkshire now bunbaker. I've been down south ten years and it's just not hitting the spot anymore and property is so expensive. Also, my two year old has a southern accent...I want her to say 'bath' and 'path' like me!

We thought about Otley but it's lack of a train station is putting us off.

How about Roundhay? Some lovely big houses and leafy streets for our budget. I quite like the idea of being closer in to Leeds but DH is worried it will feel too 'city'.
Does anyone have experience of living there?
Thanks in advance.

I went to school in Otley. My friend who lives there used Menston station, she drove up and parked there every morning.

Scotland Lane is bad for planes. I lived off Low Lane and hated it.

We hear them in the garden now in Burley but they are much higher up, so we don't hear them in the house. They don't stop conversation so really not bad at all

anyportinastorm · 30/11/2014 19:55

Bunbaker I haven't been to the Prachee for 20 years!
Zen Rendezvous is a fab chinese
We usually get on the train to Ilkley for a night out, there are 4 an hour and it's 7 minutes

HermioneWeasley · 30/11/2014 19:56

Horsforth every time - you'll have your choice of outstanding primaries, lovely community feel and not too far from the city

anyportinastorm · 30/11/2014 19:58

Roundhay isn't city, I don't know it that well but the bit near the park is nice. It has a few nice bars and restaurants including the famous Flying Pizza

Bunbaker · 30/11/2014 19:58

anyportinastorm Neither have I. Four trains an hour to Ilkley!!! There was one an hour when I lived in Guiseley, plus an extra one during the rush hour at each end of the day.

ginzillas · 30/11/2014 21:52

Fab, thanks for all this. We're going to have a drive around all these areas when we're up at Christmas. Exciting!

Hello. I started this thread late last year and got some really helpful advice on areas in North London.

Things are now moving along and my DH is in the running for a job up in West Yorkshire. We're hoping we'll be on the move soon!

We visited Horsforth over the weekend and completely love it! But I'm wondering about specific areas. Are all the roads near the station under the flightpath?

I like the look of the 'Victorias' by Newlaithes school. But are they too far to walk to the station and Town Street? Also, what's West End primary school like? Any advice gratefully received!

I meant north Leeds not London obviously!

Hi, I grew up in guiseley and my DH grew up in horsforth (went to west end primary funnily enough! Though can't say what it's like now, I would assume it's good as Horsforth schools always seem to be). We still have family there so know it pretty well. Newlaithes area to town st and the station would be real treks. You could walk to town st I suppose but not really the train station.
Re plane noise, I'm not so sure. I think it would be ok near the station but as you head up towards Brownberrie / Scotland lane it does get pretty loud (as in 'need triple glazing' loud). Hope that helps a bit.

ginzillas · 09/02/2015 07:05

Thank you. That's really helpful. So if you live around Newlaithes do people tend to use New Side Road as their high street? I didn't realise how big an area Horsforth covered.

OP posts:
poppetina · 09/02/2015 07:19

Yes I suppose if they're walking they do. Town st is only a 5 minute drive though so if you're happy to hop in your car it's still handy. Oh yes, Horsforth is massive really! But it's such a lovely place and perfect for families, I'm a bit envious of you moving there, my sister is hoping to move there later this year and I'd love to live closer to her.

ginzillas · 09/02/2015 09:13

ThanksPoppetina.Yes, it's exciting as we will be nearer family (at the moment we're in Hertfordshire). But it's also a massive upheaval and I've also just found out I'm pregnant with DC2 and due in October - exactly when we'd be moving! So my head is racing right now. But I'm excited at the thought of moving to Horsforth as we totally loved it when we came to look around. Do you think you'll ever move back?

ginzillas · 09/02/2015 09:14

Oops, was trying to bold up your name and it didn't work..

OP posts:
Stumbleine · 09/02/2015 10:16

Come to Burley! Second what others have said about friendliness. And it is so handy for Leeds by train!

ginzillas · 09/02/2015 11:06

We really like Burley too! It's next on our list after Horsforth. But think we'd get slightly more for our money in Horsforth property wise.

OP posts:
poppetina · 09/02/2015 19:20

Ahh congratulations! We don't live far away now, 30-40 mins, so still get over there quite a lot anyway. It's unlikely we'd move there I think, we won't be moving again for a while now as we moved last year.
