Painting UPVC Windows, anyone tried it?

Hi, just watching that Sarah Beany programme where someone painted their UPVC windows. I didn't know you could do this. It looked quite good (from afar). I don't know if I'd be brave enough though.

Has anyone tried it?

We used a specialist UVPC primer and the F&B exterior paint - that was four years ago and they still look lovely

I don't think the French doors in that picture are made of UPVC are they? They look like wooden ones.

unlucky83 · 27/06/2015 11:00

Sophie I don't know - they might be 'fake' -they do really good 'fake wood' windows nowadays ...a friend, after much dithering about repairs etc has just had their sash windows replaced
(its cold here - DG done well is more of a selling point than original sashes - and her heating bills were huge)
I'm impressed with them - they look like sash windows (except the glass looks more even) and even up close they look like real wood....
I think because the joints look like wood ones- not the upvc 45 degree ones - I think my only criticism is they have a slight 'wood grain' texture (not as extreme as the older versions) and ime real wood is sanded....so painted it is smooth not wood grained! But too smooth would look like plastic)

(At one point she was going to put units in wood -and found out that the failure rate (fogging) of the glass units in wood is bad - in fact wood DG seem to be only guaranteed for 5 yrs - not 10...)

i have painted my windows as they were starting to go yellow.
i had to buy upvc primer and paint, which i got from the internet.
follow the instructions and its easy

Hiya, I know this is an old thread but I thought I would let you know-I used some old farrow nd ball floor paint someone gave me on our windows a year or so ago....they look pretty good and get alot of weathering and HOT sun! I rubbed them down with fine steel wool first. I would go for it!

puggymummy1 · 03/08/2016 15:35

Hey Bean do you have a photo? I'm about to be the owner of a mahogany conservatory which looks pretty ugly. Did you use a primer?

grannycake · 03/08/2016 16:30

We painted our really ugly brown uvpc Windows about 6 years ago. Specialist primer and farrow & ball exterior paint. Massive improvement and lasted until we finally replaced with sashes this summer.

hiddenmnetter · 10/07/2017 13:38

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread - grannycake what primer did you use? Do you recall?

A PP referred to the Sandtex page; did anyone use that? What did they find? Wanted to paint over the faux-wood grain brown pvc windows we've got with white satinwood...

FourFlapjacksPlease · 11/07/2017 01:18

just seen that this thread has popped up again! I posted 2 years ago to say I was going to paint my UPVC windows. I did it with Bedeck multi surface paint and it was really good. Needed 3 coats for a really nice finish but has lasted well. No prep required so fairly easy to do.

BunnyBardot · 11/07/2017 01:44

Next door neighbour has done this. Unfortunately it looks HIDEOUS and you can tell straightaway.

Popkids · 29/07/2017 16:30

I'm hoping to paint our v tatty front door. It'll need replacing soon so happy to risk it. Our letterbox/ knocker is pretty tired too. Can I paint them too?

grannycake · 30/07/2017 07:44

Sorry I can't remember the make - think it may have been Sandtex. I bought it in Homebase. Definitely F&B exterior paint as just used the same tin to repaint the (wooden) front door

www.coldshield.tv are great. Very professional, amazing value and customer service.

Jocart75 · 14/11/2017 21:15

Me and my hubby have looked into this and he found a paint called Kolorbond which paints straight onto pvc window frames. He found this is apparently the paint professionals use and we're going to try it in the spring. Reviews we've read are good.
