How long did you stay in your property before moving?

We're buying a house - it's a "nice" house, convenient for work, but not our "dream" house (which we currently can't afford - at least not in the region we're in). We plan to stay in this house for 5-7 years, during which our careers will hopefully continue to go up, and then move to a forever home. In those 5-7 years, we will be overpaying our mortgage, and I plan to save about 50k in that time that shall go into the new home.

Is that a viable plan? Did you ever buy a house you knew you were staying in only a few years?

Hi Snowbells
Your plan sounds like mine!
I'm in a similar career where it gets better the more senior you are and you rely on your skills as you progress

I too have just bought, I'm 30 and I know I can't really stay here for more than 5 years as dp is in South trying to get his phd to further his medical career.... :(

Hopefully and god willing I'll finish post grad training before 35 but I'm keen to try and start with dc even if it's just the one! In next couple of years! It's hard getting the career first but my mum who had 4 children totally understands, respects and agrees with what I'm doing plus I do think it is easier for female seniors in my field to come out of their paths at that level for child rearing

We overpaid the mortgage with small dcs.
I was able to work flexi around DH's job so no childcare fees and 90% of my earnings went into paying down the mortgage and savings. We had completely paid one off when our dd was 6.
Then we bought one to rent out.

First flat - sold after two years
House - sold after two years
House - sold after five years
(Meant to be forever House - sold after ten years
House - sold after three years
Current house - three years, currently SSTC and due to move later this month......at 47, DH & I are hoping not to sell/move again for some time, lol!

Meant to add - when we sold the forever house, we were able to pay off the huge mortgage and buy with cash, so have been mortgage-free (yippee!) for the last 6 or so years!

Rented lots (lots!) of different places 18-25 years old
Bought first flat at 25, 2 years
Rented for 3 years, 2 different properties
Bought again at 30, 2 years 3 months
Bought again at 32, 1.5 years so far, have entirely renovated so feels like two houses in a way. We plan to live here 2-5 years but anyone's guess! Think we'll probably leave in a couple of years, we have enough space bar small garden, but want to downsize financially and hope to live mortgage free out of London when it's the right time for the whole family. Have never lived anywhere more than 2y 3 months so am pretty sure will beat that - but likely not by much!

Ooh god I'm nowhere near ready to even think about a forever home yet and I'm 40. Time in houses has ranged from 10 months to 7 years, I've owned 5 so far (bought first house at 22). We're moving in the next few months and aim to be in that house probably 5-10 years.

First house. Never moved in as the relationship ended, house was being renovated and was sold ASAP.
2nd house. One year.
3rd house. Six years.
4th house. Seven years. Got divorced.
Current house. Eleven years. Unlikely to be able to afford to ever move but glad of a roof over my head.
