Dh refusing to put laminate down in hall and says Got to be Lino

Bit bloody irritating but we bought the laminate six years ago and he's made excuse after excuse for not putting it down. I even said I'd pay someone to do it (money's not an issue so its not that) and he made excuses about needing to sand/paint the skirting boards first.

So six years on and the shitty carpet is still down. But now its literally shitty due to a new puppy.

I said to dh if the flooring could go down it would make it a lot easier to clean accidents up.

He said that we now can't use the laminate as if puppy wees on it it could get down the cracks and wreck it. He says put Lino down instead. Is he right? I'm not sure i want Lino but to be honest anything which is wipe clean now would probably be welcome. Will it look awful?

Amtico....American Tile Company, my floor layer told me that.

How long do you want the laminate to last (given that you've already shelled out for it)?

No, laminate won't last fantastically with constant wetting, but it also won't let piss soak into the floor underneath (there are joins obv, but I wouldn't exactly call them cracks).

We had (cheap) laminate in the living room and hall in our last place and it lasted 10 years with regular wet mopping. No "blown" areas at all.

Our new place has laminate in the living room, hall and kitchen and only the kitchen shows any edge lifting because of water damage and this is very slight and on one 5cm edge of one plank only. No idea how long it's been down but I'd guess a few years. We use a mop or a steam cleaner regularly.

I would suspect your dh is procrastinating again tbh, given that the investment in the laminate has already been made and presumably absorbed over the last 6 (!) years and if he does it himself the only cost is his time.

The puppy issue is temporary, surely? i wouldnt base the floor decision on it.

Get the puppy trained, and hire someone in to put the laminate in. Likely they can do the job in a day, and not cost much more than buying in flooring you don't need because you already bought flooring 6 years ago!

I am glad my DH is too terrible at DYI to get into these situations. (In other words, we would still have the carpet, but wouldnt have wasted money and storage space on unused laminate.)

VivaLeBeaver · 03/11/2014 06:07

I suspect he doesn't want laminate down for a reason and the puppy is an excuse. I thought it was due to fitting it but I've said before I'll pay to have it fitted.

We even have a runner down which soaks up most of the wee and wet boots, etc.

I'm past arguing. I just want the carpet gone.

We have karndean- two dogs and it's fab! I think your dh is right. You could sell the laminate maybe? Karndean is worth the cost IMO.

LizzieMint · 03/11/2014 07:14

You can get some laminate that is suitable for bathrooms / wet areas, probably a lot cheaper than £60/sq metre.
Def try and sell the other stuff, try eBay or a local selling page on Facebook.
Laminate's really really easy to fit, could you not do it yourself?

Ihatemytoes · 03/11/2014 11:57

Marmoleum is very hardwearing, and looks good too.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/11/2014 17:29

No way could I fit it myself. Don't have time at all. Or any coordination or dexterity or patience.

Could dogs wreck Karndean if they scratched it.?

The preparation for Karndean/Amtico needs to be perfect, i.e.; 9/12mm plywood, which would then need to be skimmed over with feather edge, also needs adhesive and professional fitting, so normally looking at total price around £100plus per sq mtr at least. There are other LVT's that are as good, if not better, just not such a recognised name, and will be a bit cheaper, but all can scratch.
You will get waste with a sheet vinyl, but a decent one, e.g., Tarkett Texstar, should work out around £25sq mtr fitted, as long as the sub floor is reasonable, doesn't need to be as precise as for an LVT.

I've measured up and its 10meters square, I certainly can't afford 1k on the hall floor!

The marmoleum click stuff looks nice.

Viva, it may be worth ringing this company. We got a great deal on our Amtico from them. They used to have the prices on the website but don't seem to now. www.floorbay.co.uk/catalog/Amtico-2-1.html

VivaLeBeaver · 04/11/2014 07:01

Whoosh, thanks. Will contact them. Did you just find your own fitter if you ordered it through them? Will most carpet fitters be able to fit it?

OP posts:
Whooshtheyweregone · 04/11/2014 16:38

They recommended a fitter to me. The correct preparation and fitting is critical to get a good finish. I may be wrong but I've got a feeling that the guarantee is invalid if you don't use a qualified Amtico fitter.

msmorgan · 07/11/2014 07:13

We have Karndean in our living room, kitchen and bathrooms. Its been down 8 years and survived an elderly incontinent dog and puppy training.

Ours cost around £20-£25 per square metre but fitting is around £20 square metre, more expensive on top of floor boards as they have to be boarded over first. You have to use a recommended fitter or you void the guarantee.

I've just bought some Harvey Maria vinyl tiles for our new bathroom and they seem as good quality as Karndean. They would cost approx £400 for the area you're doing, plus fitting.
