Where to move to between Leicester and sheffield?

We're thinking tentatively of moving in the future.

Dh works in Leicester and currently commutes over an hour to work. Though he only works in the office 3 days a week. I could quite probably get a job in any large hospital fairly easily. Though I'd prefer not to work in Leicester.

We love the Peak District for walking and mountain biking and would like to live in that direction. I'd quite like to work in sheffield hospital over others as I have friends who work there and like it.

Budget would be 300k max for a min 3 bed property. Secondary schools are a big consideration. Its also very important that there's places in the immediate vicinity for nice dog walks, ideally off lead walks. So I think we're thinking rural. But village with facilities rural rather than isolated hamlet.

I think we're leaning to moving more in sheffield direction than Leicester due to it been closer to the Peak District and also because dh only needs to commute 3 days a week. But wouldn't want to be north of sheffield. Maybe somewhere chesterfield area? We like Bakewell though its probably too far west for commuting purposes.

Oadby is a pain to get to from m1 - you have to go all the way around the ring road from j21.

ChoudeBruxelles · 28/10/2014 19:22

There is some lovely countryside in leicestershire and if you want to get to the peaks you could drive on days off outside of rush hour.

I drove from near Hinckley to Sheffield the other morning and it took me nearly 2 hours Confused

VivaLeBeaver · 28/10/2014 19:26

Mmmm, I don't think its goingto work.

All the villages which Ayra has kindly suggested would mean that we're as far away from the Peak District as we currently are. So no gain. What we make up for by going west we lose by going south.

I think places like Cromford would be too far for dh to commute to.

Looks like we might be better staying here. Thanks for the advice people.

I drive to work through those tram works daily & it makes me cry.

However my brother lives in Sheff and it takes us an hour to get to him door to door.

You do not want to Work at kings mill , QMC excellent hospital, easy commute from south notts, peaks in less than an hour. Look at wymeswold, etc

There are some lovely villages in south leicestershire. Narborough is the one with the most shops, a bank, railway line etc. Oakham and Rutland are also nice too. Great schools

puffylovett · 29/10/2014 20:17

You could consider the outskirts of staffordshire? A50 goes direct to Leicester and it's only an hour or so from the peaks. We live on the border of Cheshire and staffordshire, and I can be over in Leicester in about 75 mins and in Stanage in an hour. If you like mountain biking, somewhere near Cannock would be great..

PrincessOfChina · 29/10/2014 20:21

I grew up near Chesterfield and went to uni in Leicester. The fastest my Dad and I ever did J30 - Oadby was 50 minutes at 9am on a Sunday morning. He drove like a nutter.

I hear good things about Southwell. Would that side of Nottingham work?

VivaLeBeaver · 29/10/2014 20:23

I think Staffs would be too far. Have been online browsing some villages in the Belper area today but I think we'll leave it for now and see how we feel after dd has finished school.

Ockbrook

I'm not understanding the reasoning for not living/working in Leicester. I lived in Clarendon Park for 10 years and it was by far the nicest place I've ever lived. Knighton and Oadby are lovely and all three hospitals are nicer to work in than any in Nottingham/Derby/Kettering/Lincoln/Mansfield and believe me I worked in them all over a 15 year period.
There are lovely villages south of Leicester on a6 such as Burton Ovary, Foxton etc etc
Leicester is Fab now for shopping (john lewis opened the week after I moved up north!)

Bunbaker · 30/10/2014 11:09

The commute south of Sheffield is horrible. There are lengthy roadworks just now and junction 29 has been an accident black spot for years now and is mentioned on the travel news nearly every day.

A workmate commutes between Sheffield and Nottingham and doesn't see much of his family on weekdays.

kpandthesunshineband2 · 30/10/2014 21:45

? north side of nottingham so can get to Leicester via A46 - no idea of commuter times but google directions says 47 mins.
Then can get to Peaks via Junction 27 - about an hour to Peaks

lljkk · 30/10/2014 21:58

I was hoping that a commute down the m1 to Leicester would be quick.

hahahahahahahahahah

sorry, but

hahahahahahahahahahahah

M1. Quick. Pull the other one.

(Used to live in Loughborough).

Stick to commuting on A46 I suggest, although Loughborough is frightfully central for everywhere in other respects.

lljkk · 30/10/2014 21:59

ps: listen to traffic reports on 5Live between 4 & 6pm on weekdays. You'll soon see what I mean about M1. Fridays = time.

FunkyBoldRibena · 30/10/2014 22:08

Or a Thursday. For example tonight. What usually is a 45 minute journey, took 2 hours. Issue: J21-22. Took an hour to just do that stretch.

Fridays - no no no. I'd always leave work early and work from home whenever I could on a Friday...and on a Monday morning as well.

eyestightshut · 30/10/2014 23:36

Assuming you are a nurse what is your areas of expertise? Nottingham has 2 hospitals QMC and City. All Upper GI, oncology, respiratory, cardiac, renal and elective orthopaedic are at City, with Neuro, hpb, trauma and colorectal at QMC . You can get to City easily from A46 side of town especially at the time you would be starting and finishing shifts.

sleepdodger · 31/10/2014 00:00

Stay around Leicester but head out to rural leics eg Newtown linford etc - pretty small but quick into town for glenfield or LRI
There are good hospitals there!
