Anyone have a mezzanine/double height space -- is it more trouble than it's worth?

Thinking of this on an extension - so double height dining with cosy mezzanine lounge above....but have recently been at one friends and the acoustics were ridiculous - and and another friend has since covered hers in as it was an impractical space....

I think it depends on too many variables to advise without more knowledge of your house/family/interior design/expectations.

We have a mezzanine landing (double height), as do my parents (triple height). It works fine in both houses because acoustics are not normally a consideration in halls/landings. Ours is quieter, probably a combination of double not triple and carpet not tiles/wood.

If your mezzanine lounge is going to go over a carpeted, curtained, wood table, plushly furnished dining space, and be see for quiet sitting/reading/knitting, then the two spaces will probably work together. If your rooms are tiles/wood, with lots of windows, a glass dining table and you want to watch telly/play games consoles in the lounge, then it will be a disaster!

Of course, if you're a two person household and you're only likely to use one room at a time then there'll be no conflict :)

Not much help, but hopefully given some things to think about ....

That is really helpful - yes in hallway see that the acoustics wont matter...I had thought of adding an evening sitting room above kitchen diner -- which would be glass & stone downstairs - but sofas and carpets on top....

We are building mezzanine floors on two bedrooms. These will be sleeping spaces.

Friend had a mezzanine above her kitchen. She used it as a bedroom but it was noisy and a cosy TV watching area which was more successful.

We have a galleried landing upstairs with an open sitting/tv room off it (ie no door). It's just DH and I though, and I have said to him that if you had kids it would be noisy as the sound does travel.

Main floor is open plan living/kitchen/dining and the cooking smells do go upstairs.

We love it as a space - it works really well for us and the open staircase looks lovely.
