How can i make a cold draughty cupboard, warm and suitable for a play space?

It is under the stairs and has bare walls and uncovered floor and stairs (the underneath of them IYSWIM)

Obviously i need to get it floored and something on the walls but what do i do before that to make it more draught proof and insulated?

We loved playing under the stairs as kids. Carpet floors and lots of pillows and blanket we made beds for dolls and each other.

Yes that is what ds has been doing but it's bloody grim in there. I have tried to discourage him but he calls it his secret den and will spend ages playing there. So really i need to make it slightly warmer than an icicle before i find a frozen child in it some day.

Go the full '70s and carpet the walls.

Grin "stroke the furry wall"

I could use it as a calming mechanism for if he has a tantrum!

Seal any gaps around edges of floor and stair joints. Basic sealant in tube from home base etc will be fine.

Felt insulation on floor, then add carpet

Add beanbag

Can you add a few thin shelves under stair part and a basket for storing bits?

Have a look at houzz.com
There are some amazing pictures if you search for 'play area under stairs'.

DiaDuit · 26/10/2014 17:14

Thank you. Yes shelves will be added too.

Will check Houzz.

If he likes it as it is, I'd be tempted to leave it (cosmetically wise, but seal any obvious draughts ) - doing anything different and it may lose its appeal to him

You little boy sounds fab!

DiaDuit · 26/10/2014 17:25

I'd have to floor it at the very least as it is bare concrete and freezing and of course all suggestions about wearing socks or slippers fall on deaf ears Hmm he is fab- i wish i had his imagination to enjoy a space as grim as that Grin

Assuming your stairs are in your hall (ours aren't), I guess the other thing is to ensure the outside door is well draught proofed.

ChishandFips33 · 26/10/2014 17:26

Mind you having googled you could sit together and choose - there's some amazing ideas!

DiaDuit · 26/10/2014 17:31

The front door is UPVC and i cant find any draughts around it. There is also a radiator at the foot of the stairs and the hall itself is tiny but i'm guessing all the heat floats up the stairs. The house is a terrace and actually very warm except for this cupboard. The door to the cupboard is in the living room and you can feel a strong draught from it when sitting opposite it.
