Thoughts on tongue & groove panelling in bathroom

So far I've sought help on baths, paint and now walls - thank you MN, our bathroom redo would not be the same without you!

Just wondering about tongue and groove panelling for the walls of a bathroom in a Victorian house.

I always wanted this back in the 90s, and I still see it around, so am hoping it's a classic look that's stood the test of time!

I know it can be done well or badly though, so just seeking advice / top tips from those who have it, or even don't have it but have views on it!

I've just got two main questions:

  1. What height of panelling do you think looks best? The company I'm looking at offers either 800mm high or 1m high. I'm wondering if it's too tall, does it make the room close in / look smaller? (I was even checking out the T&G on Downton Abbey at the weekend, trying to decide!)
  1. Does anyone have any tips for how to achieve a ledge round the top? I think it would be really useful, but the panels I'm looking at only come with a dado which you couldn't put anything on.

Thoughts much appreciated!

Thanks mad, v helpful - am off to scour interwebs for a mirror like it!

V happy to hear dado was from B&Q and thanks for tip about the trade section. I only looked online so glad to hear.

Was also wondering about dark top vs light bottom (and vice versa). Was edging towards dark bottom so pleased to hear!

Sorry, I missed this thread earlier. I have done this as part of a Victorian restoration.
Mine (not from B&Q) was 1200 I drove the joiner mad wanting it to be authentic.....four feet seems to have been standard, so hr has a lot of cutting to do.
Routered MDF will not look the same. I think the Victorians were looking for an enclosed, cosy look.
800 just looks silly in an old house

That paint really is lovely Thunder!

Okay I have taken the plunge - I've ordered the shorter T&G - however it's going to go on top of a high skirting board so it will kind of be halfway between the short and tall.

I see what you mean 7to5 about authenticity - but it's a really small bathroom with low ceilings, so in this instance, I decided shorter might be better.

Joining the party late but I am a t and g/panelling fiend and have used in 2 bathrooms recently.

See this one for panelling ...colporter.tumblr.com/post/18793843264/bathroom-tour
For a bull nose finish on top of the t and g. Handy for leaning pics etc.

I also recently did this.... colporter.tumblr.com/page/2 as a bit of a refresh rather than all thought through like the first one.

I recommend a carpenter and some MDF... Amazing what results you can get. Please post your results!
