Worktop depth for an Ikea kitchen

Rather than face the frustration that is the Ikea kitchen 'helpline' and/or another trek out to Croydon, I'm hoping someone here will know.

We've got an Ikea kitchen plan which lists all the worktop pieces as 635 mm depth. We're getting the standard 600 mm cupboards. Why does the worktop depth need to be 635 mm? There are some areas in the kitchen where we've got pipes that stick out and we've been told to go for a slightly wider worktop there.

Some parts of the kitchen won't be affected by pipes at all and they've still listed 635 mm depth worktops. Is there any reason why we couldn't go for a more standard 620 mm depth worktop?

Any ideas / advice welcome.

You don't need a wider worktop for the parts with pipes because they leave a service area behind each cupboard for pipes etc?

Haven't used ikea yet but every single kitchen we've bought and fitted has had these, think it's standard. Guess it depends on the type of pipes but we've always just amended the backs of cupboards.

You def need a bit of overhang on the worktop because if you spilled something on the top or are trying to wipe off crumbs etc, the overhang will stop it going in your drawers and cupboards. Plus it looks better!

They've prob specified 635 to make it uniform. Also, if your walls are slightly out it could give you more scope to adjust if needed.

Without seeing the plan it's difficult to say for certain! I'd suggest calling them but don't think ikea are that sort of store!!

The cupboards are 600mm but then you have got the thickness of the doors as well so 635 will be the minimum to make their kitchens have the correct overhang.
Ikea kitchen units are flush to the wall there is no service gap behind them. Standard units from b and q etc are 570mm deep so you get a lot more usable space in the Ikea ones but they are more faff if your walls aren't straight.
We are about to order an Ikea kitchen and as we have pipes which we can't move we are ordering a 720mm worktop and putting a batten behind the units to push them forward a bit. Fortunately we have the space to do this and it does mean we get deeper worktop space to work on fillupwithcrapso not too bad.

Darn that's annoying if it has to 635cm.

I had a chat with an Ikea kitchen person today and he said you could potentially get away with 620 mm but that was the minimum.

Hi the reason for the ikea 635mm worktop is that the base unit is 600mm wide where Howdens,b and q and wickes are 575mm with 600mm and 616mm worktops.
Ikea need to have 635mm because they give you more unit space but no worktop jig has 635 Peg hole to do butt and scribe joint.
I've had to modify my jig for this.
You can't use smaller worktop as with door thickness and unit size the worktop will fall short on top of your base units and water will spill all over the doors and draws.
Another pain is I've had to sink all pipes into the walls and my electrician charged more as cables had to be chased all the way to floor also to get unit to sit flush on walls.
If the rooms are not sq which most isn't there is not much room to pack units off walls and nothing to trim off to plumb.
Hope this helps.
