low profile shower trays

They look so much nicer, been told by our local independent bathroom supplier that they sell much more of these nowadays than the more traditional type on legs & that as a result they are now cheaper, however.....

what do you do if you have a leak? How do you access the pipework/waste if it is all under the floor? Do you need to have clear access from the ceiling below or is it a case of risk it & rip it all out if it goes wrong?

What are the benefits of low profile trays over the traditional type? Is it purely aesthetics?

Trying to decide which type to go for. I like the look of the low profile but DH is favouring traditional for practical reasons. Is for loft conversion en suite, floor will be chipboard & shower will be situated above existing stairwell so not easy to access via ceiling beneath.

Purely aesthetics.

As well as access for leaks also make sure your shower has sufficient height/fall for drainage, especially if you have a very powerful pumped shower system.

We opted for a Mira Flight standard shower tray with a very beautiful sleek shower door made by matki.

I too prefer the look of the low profile trays but it's of minimal impact once the room is finished. And many friends have had problems with low profile trays and have reverted to standard trays.

Make sure you have enough 'drop' to the waste. We have a loft conversion and the builder had to raise the shower tray because the waste pipes were on the same level. It still struggles to drain quickly enough.

thankyou for your replies. don't think the drop will be an issue but still sounds like a standard tray will be the best bet in this case then. It really won't be very accessible from beneath due to being right above the staircase, and dh definitely doesn't fancy having to rip it all out if the waste leaks.
