The salt bit in the dishwasher (I think)

On the floor of the dishwasher, there is a removable (twist and lift off) seal type thing. I think that's where the salt goes. Anyway, when I take the seal part off the water is right up to the top. Does that sound like there is something wrong.? The washer works well btw.

Ours is like that too. I just chuck more salt in till I can kind of see it.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 14/10/2014 22:03

That's it. Pour salt in and it displaces the water. That's right.

enriquetheringbearinglizard · 14/10/2014 22:04

Oh and do a maintenance wash. Clean the filters, empty machine, hottest wash possible.
Flushes the pipes through.

Behoove · 14/10/2014 22:09

Filters? Blush. Where, typically would that be?
I had the thing a year before I found out where to put the rinse aid and salt, useless instructions came with it.

But thanks for the quick replies about the salt hole Flowers

If you have lost the instruction book, you can probably download it from the manufacturer's website.

If not known, the model number, serial number and fabrication date are often engraved on the top edge if the door.

Behoove · 14/10/2014 22:25

Thanks PigletJohn, I'll have a look for that.

What make is it?

The filter in mine isn't that obvious. On the floor of the machine, behind where the salt goes is a mesh/basket looking bit with a handle, it's kind of oblong. You hold the handle bit and twist and the whole thing lifts out.
Underneath that is a metal cylinder basket that also comes out. It traps all kinds of crap and needs cleaning frequently.

To be honest it's all a bit of a pain really and not that easy to fit together again, but that's probably our Friday afternoon machine.

Mine's a Miele. My descriptions may not be typical.

You can get instructions on the net, and the usual advice about running a hot wash on empty is good for cleaning it all out. Miele cleaner that you put in the machine when it's empty is also very good, well, it all smells lovely and fresh and seems sparkly clean after. I buy them when they're on offer as they leave the machine looking much better than the Finish cleaner does.
Should say, we're in a very hard water area, so that probably makes a difference.

It's a Neff. I'll take out the bottom tray and have a root around tomorrow, thanks again.

A Neff is like a Bosch. Apart from the name badge.

Enrique is about right. Look which way up the cylinder fits. You lift out the filters and rinse them in the sink. Use a nylon washing up brush.

Yours may have a water hardness adjuster in the top left hand corner of the door frame (kneel down to see it). A tiny blue plastic dial. If you have not used salt for a long time it will be scaly inside. The limescale will slowly dissolve over many washes.

Also add rinse aid. Aldi own brand tablets, rinse and salt is very good and cheap. The salt is granular, it is not the same as cooking or table salt.

All in one tablets are not as good as using salt and rinse aid. Salt is especially important for good results.

LakeFlyPie · 15/10/2014 00:41

Is salt necessary in v soft water area?
I've never used it yet!

PigletJohn · 15/10/2014 00:49

The manufacturers say yes.

However you can adjust the machine for soft water, and it will use very little salt, so seldom needs topping up.

cerealqueen · 15/10/2014 00:53

Do all in ones dispense the need for salt? never used it, live in london......wondering why it has broken down....

PigletJohn · 15/10/2014 01:00

No.

They work better with salt and rinse aid.

specialsubject · 15/10/2014 10:56

OP, the instructions should be on line for your dishwasher.

they all need separate salt and rinse aid. You can get 30 tabs, salt and rinse aid in Wilkinson for under a fiver which in this case is cheaper than Aldi.
