More duck egg paint suggestions..?

Hi all

There have been a few duck egg paint threads over the years, but none recently.

Does anyone have top tips for good duck egg paint these days?

I went to B&Q yesterday and found they don't stock Fired Earth paint anymore, and was hoping to get a sample of their duck egg.

(Although have just read on here though that the Fired Earth duck egg might be too dark.)

So if anyone has good tips for paint that is a bit duck egg-ish (may go by different names) would love to hear.

(Am v. interested in the Laura Ashley duck egg too, though if you go on to the Homebase website there are people moaning that it's too thin.)

Any opinions v gratefully received!

Sorry - should add that the paint is for a bathroom. Am hoping not to make the bathroom too cold, so if anyone can reassure that duck egg is indeed not too cold, that would be great too...!

I've just typed 'images of duck egg blue' into google and it came up with a page full of samples. On hovering over the sample it gives the manufacturers contact details. Have a look and see if there are any you like. Smile

You've just spurred me on as I'm intending to used this colour band for my bedroom as I love it.

NoveltySlippers · 12/10/2014 21:00

Thanks! That's a good idea, although ideally I was hoping for personal recommendations as colours on my computer screen are a bit unreliable (so don't want to spend £££ on loads of samples based on my dodgy/unreliable computer screen!)

So far I've bought a duck egg sample pot by a company called Rustoleum (from B&Q) - seems to be an Annie Sloan-type chalk paint. It's the only sample I have so far and came up very light and spearmint-y. Am pretty sure that it's not quite duck egg.

yes I see what you mean re the computer screen, but if you do see any you like using the method I suggested, you could always contact them and ask if they'll send you a sample.....saves a lot of leg work.

NoveltySlippers · 12/10/2014 21:39

True. Just found an old MN thread that said duck egg is sooo 2010/11! Ah well Smile

Will still keep looking for a nice one though. I still love it!

I'm trying to find the perfect one for my kitchen. The b&q own brand kitchen one was minty green and no good and there weren't any others in kitchen paint.

reddaisy · 12/10/2014 21:47

Not exactly duck egg but we have got Farrow and Ball Blue Dix in our bedroom and it is lovely.

dixiechick1975 · 12/10/2014 22:14

We had laura ashley light duck egg blue in our old bedroom. Looked lovely - was a big light room. I painted the room and it went on fine not too thin.

NoveltySlippers · 13/10/2014 07:44

Thanks. Will get a Laura Ashley tester then. And I'll check out Blue Dix at F&B.

Have been looking at Little Greene, but on my computer their blues all look very green!

V sorry, only came on to recommend Fired Earth Northern Light, but I see that's no good. Lovely to paint with though, if you can get a sample from anywhere else you should definitely try. It's a gorgeous duck egg.

NoveltySlippers · 13/10/2014 08:26

Thanks Mairzy, I did spot that on their website, and will definitely order a sample online now it's come recommended!

Trouble I found was that duck egg is interpreted differently by the paint companies. Some show it as a pale aqua, others as a greeny blue. If you find the perfect shade on a swatch of anything most trade shops will colour match.
F&B Borrowed Light is a gorgeous pale blue with a slightly green tint but not sure if you'd describe it as duck egg.

reddaisy · 13/10/2014 08:54

We have just repainted our entire house and used mostly Fired Earth and Farrow and Ball the only rooms we did in Little Greene are the ones I am not sure about now. The colours are brighter than FE or F&B which seem more muted and therefore a bit more sophisticated somehow.

HaveToWearHeels · 13/10/2014 09:38

We used Dulux "Birds Egg" from their Authentic Origins range which I think is only available from Homebase (after spending a small fortune on tester pots). It's lovely and even our painter commented on how nice it was to use.

LBOCS · 13/10/2014 20:37

We used the LA pale duck egg in our kitchen. It's a lovely colour, but despite using the kitchen/bathroom range, it has started to peel a lot in the steam from the kitchen - and I ventilate a lot!

Alwayscheerful · 13/10/2014 20:52

Farrow and ball, borrowed light us a pale duck egg, it can appear blue/green or green/ blue depending on the light and the size of the room, it tones beautifully with Laura Ashley Duck egg & Laura Ashley pale duck egg.

JustStirItUna · 13/10/2014 20:58

Another one here for Laura Ashley. Did bedroom in it a few years back. Colour was by far the best I'd sampled and went on lovely. No complaints!

NoveltySlippers · 13/10/2014 23:05

Hi all - thanks for the fab suggestions. Went to Homebase this eve and have come back with Laura Ashley duck egg, Farrow and Ball Blue Ground and Crown Heritage Flagon.

The last two are kind of experimental (on either side of the blue/green spectrum).

I looked for F&B Borrowed Light and they didn't have any.... Shame - will try and order online if none of the others any good.

Will report back. Thanks very much for all the v helpful suggestions!

...will also report back on Fired Earth Nordic Light, Little Greene Bone China Mid (think it was called that) and F&B Light Blue 22.

Have now spent small fortune and may need to start hiding tester pots from DH whose philosophy is bung on first pot you find that vaguely resembles desired colour. (Certainly more sensible financially than my approach, even if it would mean using the first duck egg we tried that should really have been renamed Toothpaste Blue!)

Completely sympathise OP , we painted our lounge duck egg a few years ago and choosing the right colour was a nightmare . I changed my choice at the very last minute when I came home from work and the painter had done a small section in my chosen colour and I was horrified. He had painted the whole room white to make it easier . I luckily had about a thousand sample pots so chose another one
End result was fantastic and I had originally discounted the colour as being too minty / light and too green . It looks perfect .when the whole room is that colour it takes on a subtle depth that isn't apparent when you just see a swatch. It's Little Green Starlings Nest .Decorator said its the nicest colour he's done .

bryte · 14/10/2014 08:54

F & B pale powder looks quite dick eggish in our north facing living room.

bryte · 14/10/2014 08:54

Duck

NoveltySlippers · 14/10/2014 09:23

Ggirl I'm going to have to try that too...wonder if I can intercept my Little Greene order from yesterday and add it....sounds lovely!

Bryte Grin

Someone said they thought F&B pale powder might be discontinued.. Will investigate as it's been mentioned elsewhere too.

Been down the F and B route also Little Greene. However ,my most favourite in the 'duck eggish' colour is Craig and Rose , Moonstone Grey. We have used it in several houses and it seems to be a shade that nothing fights with !! Coverage has always been great and the price ,although not cheap is a fair saving on the 'big boys'. B and Q used to sell it. Just a thought. Good luck.
