Replacing the control box of central heating

I have tried googling, but couldn't find anything. The box/panel thing I use to put my heating and hot water on is faulty. When we had a new boiler fitted 18 months ago, the plumber mentioned that there was a problem with the connections, but that he would leave it 'to save us money' Hmm. Basically, the buttons don't work properly and have to be stroked, pressed quickly/slowly/ several times/just once and held down/whacked with a mallet to have any chance of coming on.

It has got a lot worse, and now barely works at all. The water is on a timer, so not really a problem, but I can't get the heating on, or, if I do get it on, I can't get it off, so would rather leave it off at the moment.

Does anyone have any idea how big or expensive a job this is likely to be to rectify, and does it have to be a plumber who does it, since it's not really to do with the plumbing itself at all.

I expect you mean the programmer.

Probably you have a hot water cylinder not a combi.

Many of the old ones fit onto a wall bracket and a replacement will clip on. Anyway, a new one is easy to fit with not many wires to connect. Usually a heating engineer will do it. Honeywell is as good as you can get.

Assuming you have a room thermostat on the wall (you should have) the Honeywell CM907 is much better than whatever you have got. If you have a combi boiler, you can use that and not need a programmer, because combis do not need a timer for the hot water.

Go to the Screwfix website and search "programmer"
