Space saving shower door help

We are having a loft conversion with en suite, work starts next month so just trying to sort bathroom & need a bit of help with shower planning if anyone is willing!?

The en suite will be 1000mm x 2800mm with door from bedroom approx central on the long wall. Sink unit will go opposite door, with toilet at one end beneath window & 1000mm shower at the other end. Space wise, we have approx 550-600mm clearance between shower & sink unit

We've sussed out our main options for a limited space as bifold, infold or sliding, however we have issues with each so are struggling to decide!

Bifold: most we've seen have frames around each piece of glass as well as around the edge of the enclosure, in my view more faff to clean than frameless. They somehow seem flimsier/more wobbly than the solid hinged doors too

Infold: fab idea but v v expensive - can't find cheaper online so ruled out on that basis.

Sliding: seen a few nice ones but only in a 1200 or larger. They are available in 1000 but will only have an opening of 375-400mm & not sure this is really big enough. Will it feel like a squeeze? In which case do we rule it out?

Only other thing we've seen that may be possible is a frameless hinged type. It has a fixed panel of approx 250mm at the left & then the hinge, with an opening of approx 650mm. However, because it opens outwards I am concerned it will hit the sink unit (even if we choose a slimline type) & maybe the room isn't big enough for outwards opening door. I'm wondering if we ought to rule it out on this basis. Would this be a deal breaker for you?

I'd really appreciate any help/advice or suggestions for alternatives I've not considered. Many thanks

I got a Merlyn series 8 infold due to space issues.

Was pricey - the most expensive thing we bought, but excellent quality so haven't regretted it.

We bought this Novellini frameless bi-fold to fit a 760mm (although we bought from a local company). It's just being installed and it looks great.

This would probably be the right size for you:

Good luck!

Go for a wet room instead?

DreamboatDaddy · 10/10/2014 10:58

ArtisanBaps - I like that in-fold door! Good job I didn't know about that before we ordered ours or I'd have gone even further over budget! Smile

How about frameless hinged double doors - so each is 500mm?

here

The doors can open in or out. We have similar on a quadrant so the doors are curved, they close securely with a magnetic strip.

Thanks for suggestions folks.

Artisan that's the exact infold door we've seen & agree its a fab idea. Just not sure we can stretch to it budget wise unless we compromise heavily in other areas.

Dreamboat the door looks good & certainly much nicer for being frameless. How sturdy is it? Were you able to see it on display anywhere before buying?

Owl - dh not keen on wetroom for risk of leaks. Plus we want a drawer unit beneath sink for storage so wouldnt want it to get water damaged.

Raising thats a nice door too & infolding could work well for us. Going to research it more as dont know much about this brand & not seen any locally - def want to try before we buy!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Can you get a single sliding? We've got one and it looks so much nicer than the double ones. Think our shower is 1000 x 800. Looks a bit like this. Or does your shower need to be rectangular?

BaffledSomeMore · 10/10/2014 23:40

We had a slightly smaller en suite in one house with the layout you describe. We went for a small wall mounted basin to maximise space and for the shower enclosure we had a small fixed panel against the wall the sink was on and a door that was hinged on the opposite wall. The door to the en suite opened into the bedroom

The bad news is that this was some years ago, it was the only one we could find and had to be imported. It cost more than the rest of the room put together but it really worked and we never regretted it. The room felt usable rather than spectacularly cramped

sorry just seen the extra replies

LadyWellian The shower will be rectangular & built into a recess, 1000 wide x 800 deep, & with a 1000 wide door. We looked at the sliding doors but the ones we've seen don't seem to have a very big opening - typically 375-400mm wide. How wide does yours open? Do you have to turn sideways to step in & out?

Baffled - so the shower door opened out effectively against the doorway to the bedroom rather than against the sink? Hadn't thought of hinging it on the opposite side, but could work for us too as our en suite door will also open out into the bedroom. There are plenty of this type of door available now so will revisit this option.

We are going back to try & make a final decision this weekend - wish us luck!

Yy that's right. I was pregnant when we did the room so I needed to be able to get in and out easily.

omama · 15/10/2014 22:08

lol I'm pregnant now. There's no way I'd fit through a sliding door atm!

Our ensuite shower is exactly the same size as yours will be and we have a single sliding door which has been great. I've just measured the opening and it's 400mm which I can walk into without turning sideways.

omama · 16/10/2014 22:03

thanks choirmumoftwo. What make is it?

I honestly can't remember! It was installed about 9 years ago. Found it on the internet though so I'm sure a search would bring it up - we just typed in 1000mm sliding shower doors.
